For the first 40 years as an independent state, Ireland faced many difficulties. Failing to provide sufficient employment opportunities, emigration and austerity were constant themes. During several decades of relative prosperity from the 1960s, foreign investment was encouraged and created new employment opportunities. A recession in the 1980s was followed by a remarkable period of prosperity from the mid-1990s. This was driven first by an expor…

  • Housing Models and Inequality

    P J Drudy, M Punch•ARTICLE•Housing Studies•2002•Cited by: 3•References: 7

Different housing models can be identified in Europe and elsewhere, which vary in terms of the relative emphasis placed on market or non-market provision. Drudy P. J. and Drudy S. M. (1979) Population mobility and labour supply in rural regions: North Norfolk and the Galway Gaeltacht, Reg. Studies 13, 91–99. Rural regions can be conveniently divided into two types—‘marginal’ and ‘prosperous’. This paper shows that there are a number of close similarities between the problems of these two types. The North Norfolk sub-region of eastern England is compared to the Galway Gaeltacht in western Ireland. A…

Drudy P. J. (1978) Depopulation in a prosperous agricultural sub-region, Reg. Studies 12, 49–60. It is little known that the phenomenon of depopulation is not confined to the marginal argricultural regions of Britain but is present in prosperous regions also. This paper examines the extent of depopulation in one such prosperous sub-region, North Norfolk in eastern England. The process is shown to have accelerated during the most recent decade. Am…

Drudy P. J. and Wallace D. B. (1971) Towards a development programme for remote rural areas: A case study in North Norfolk, Reg. Studies 5, 281–288. The problems and prospects of remote rural areas are considered and an area in North Norfolk is selected for more detailed examination. Analysis of data for large statistical units conceals major problems which are clearly visible when examined at a micro level. For this reason, the process of popula…
