Ambient ageism
Ageing-in-place environments are increasingly marked by ambient digital technologies designed to keep older adults safe while they live independently at home. These AgeTech companies market their products by constructing imagined visual and aural worlds of the smart home, usually deploying ageist representations of ageing and older adults. The advertisements are multimodal, and while what is seen on screen is often considered most important in a …

The securitisation of dementia
Nearly 50 million people around the world live with dementia, with statistics predicting a steady increase in prevalence for the foreseeable future. There is a need for comprehensive and compassionate dementia care. Long-term care homes have built special care units for people living with middle- to late-stage dementia. Among other services, these care units often use innovative security technologies that monitor and curtail movement beyond unit …
Women executives and off‐the‐job misconduct by high‐profile employees
The risk of off‐the‐job misconduct by high‐profile employees is a serious concern of top management in professional sport organizations, media and entertainment companies, and public‐facing entities in the government and education sectors. Yet there is little research on how to prevent or mitigate this form of misconduct in organizations. Utilizing upper echelons theory and the literature on demographic composition, we examine the relationship be…
Against environmental anaesthesia
Secure long-term care units come with a unique set of challenges, particularly around exit-seeking behaviour. Arts-based environmental interventions on secure units successfully reduce problematic behaviours, while simultaneously ensuring resident safety and improving resident quality of life. The present arts-based project enhanced a distraction mural intervention to incorporate magnets as a participative arts feature. The project was evaluated …
Re-socialising sound
Over the last decades, an increasing amount of attention has been given to the acoustical environments of health care settings. Through innovative multi-disciplinary research and practice, sound in health care is being conceptualised as an object to be measured, controlled and minimised to improve individual well-being and health outcomes. Among the settings and populations being addressed are people living with dementia in residential long-term …
Painting in situ
Quality of life in long-term care is a growing concern for clinicians and social scientists. Attention is turning increasingly to the impact of the institutional environment on residents’ experience of themselves and others. In an effort to improve residents’ experience, distraction and illusion murals are being created to disguise exit doors and decrease exit-seeking behaviour. Most research focuses on the effect on exit-seeking behaviour once m…
The View at the Top or Signing at the Bottom? Workplace Diversity Responsibility and Women's Representation in Management
Women lag men in their representation in management jobs, which negatively affects women's careers and company performance. Using data from 81 publicly traded firms with more than 2,000 establishments, the authors examine the impact of two management structures that may influence gender diversity in management positions. The authors find no association between the presence of an HR executive on the top management team-a structure envisioned in pr…

The determinants of job seekers' reputation perceptions
Although job seekers' reputation perceptions may be based on different factors than other constituents (e.g., investors, consumers), we know little about the antecedents of job seekers' reputation perceptions. The present study utilizes verbal protocol analysis to explore the factors that job seekers consider when evaluating employers' reputations. Results from this qualitative investigation are complemented and cross-validated with an experiment…
Gainsharing and women's and men's relative pay satisfaction
There is some evidence that women have equal or higher pay satisfaction than similarly situated men, even though they may earn less than these men. Using Major's (1994) model of entitlement, this study examined gender differences in pay satisfaction in two companies before and after gainsharing bonus programmes were introduced. Results indicated that women had higher pay satisfaction than men prior to the introduction of gainsharing and there was…
