A Star is Born: An analysis of the media construction of Linda Caicedo’s sporting star status in Colombia
The teenage Colombian woman footballer Linda Caicedo has had a meteoric rise to prominence following her performances in several international tournaments in 2022 and 2023. Her star status is important to analyse from an intersectional perspective given her identity as a Black woman from humble Colombian origins. There has been insufficient analysis of the meanings and representations of Black women footballers, let al.one sportswomen from Latin …

Early plant cultivation in the Eastern Woodlands of North America
Twenty-five years ago Joseph Caldwell prepared a summary of Eastern Woodlands prehistory, with emphasis on the origins of food production and subsequent developments, for a volume of comparative cultural-historical studies entitled Courses toward urban life . Primary evidence of plant use in general and of cultigens in particular derives from a variety of sources: pollen; macrobotanical remains in open sites, rockshelters, and caves; and trace-el…

No Place for a Left-winger: The Historical Relationship Between Football and the Farc in Colombia
This article explores the relationship between the FARC (the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) and football in Colombia. It argues that until the presidency of Juan Manuel Santos, the FARC had been excluded from being part of the national ‘us’ when celebrating successes of the national men’s football team. In fact, sporting nationalism projects articulated around World Cup successes in 1962, 1990, 1994 and the Copa América in 2001 projected…
Colombia's Political Football: President Santos' National Unity Project and the 2014 Football World Cup
The Colombian football team's performance in the 2014 World Cup has allowed President Santos to use football in his national unity project. The selección is a rare unifying symbol in Colombia and politicians have previously sought to use football in the construction of a national political project. This article explores why, on this occasion, football has proved a more effective tool than when it was employed by Presidents Gaviria (in 1993-1994) …

Archaeology and Anthropology: A Personal Overview of the Past Half-Century
Having begun graduate work in anthropology and prehistoric archaeology at a time (early 1950s) and place (University of Chicago) where the two were closely linked, I subsequently participated in work devoted to early agricultural economies in Western Asia and Eastern North America; to the relations among archaeology, history, and science; and to the place of anthropological archaeology in the contemporary world. In this article I discuss my perso…

Prehistoric Footprints in Jaguar Cave, Tennessee
About 4500 years ago, during the Late Archaic period, nine explorers reconnoitered several passages within a large cave in north central Tennessee. Although prehistoric cave exploration was not unusual in eastern North America, this particular trip is unique because 274 footprints of these ancient cavers are preserved in the damp floor sediment of a side passage. Analyses of the route taken by the explorers, and of their footprint trail significa…
Robert John Braidwood (1907-2003)
THE ANGLO-AMERICAN generation of archaeologists who spanned the period from pre-World War II through the mid-twentieth century included numerous giants in the field, such as J. Desmond Clark, Grahame Clark, V. Gordon Childe, Dorothy Garrod, Emil Haury, Jesse Jennings, Kathleen Kenyon, A.V. Kidder, Richard MacNeish, Stuart Piggott, Sir Mortimer Wheeler, Sir Leonard Woolley. Technical note: Sex determination of prehistoric human paleofeces
Analysis of 12 prehistoric human paleofecal specimens from the Mammoth Cave System, Kentucky has produced the first estimate of biological sex using fecal material from ancient humans. Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dating indicates that the specimens range in age from ca. 2700 B.P. to 2300 B.P. Dietary contents and steroids were extracted and analyzed. Chromatography and radioimmunoassay were used to measure levels of testostero…
Nomads of Luristan: History, Material Culture, and Pastoralism in Western Iran
The Lur nomads live in Luristan in the west of modern Iran. Two Danish scholars, Carl Gunnar Feilberg and Lennart Edelberg, visited this region in 1935 and 1964 respectively, and assembled two valuable ethnographic collections which provide a remarkable perspective over time on the historical transformation of Lur nomadism at a critical time when the sedentarization of these people was gathering momentum. This book discusses Lur material culture …

Archaeology, Anthropology, and the Culture Concept
sThe culture concept has been central to anthropology since the formational period of the discipline. Yet for much of the discipline's history it was used without explicit definition. Recent attempts to define it have yielded a range of varied formulations in the subdisciplines of archaeology and sociocultural anthropology. Does this mean that the center of anthropology-shared belief in a unified culture concept-has been destroyed? Quite the oppo…

Systematic, Intensive Surface Collection
Archaeologists would agree that the cultural debris lying on the surface of a site in some way reflects what is buried below. However, few attempts have been made to discover just how closely one can predict from detailed knowledge of surface distributions what he will find if he digs.In October and November, 1968, surface collections based on statistical sampling techniques were made at two mounds in Diyarbakir Vilayet, Turkey. The tabulated dat…
The Razor's Edge: Symbolic-Structuralist Archeology and the Expansion of Archeological Inference

Aspects of Zuni Prehistory: Preliminary Report on Excavations and Survey in the El Morro Valley of New Mexico
Preliminary assessment of survey and excavation data suggest that major shifts occurred regionally in settlement patterns within El Morro Valley during the last half of the 13th century A.C. Clusters of small masonry pueblos on ridge tops are replaced by a few, large, defensible pueblos; then the valley is abandoned early in the 14th century. Intensification of intercommunity warfare is postulated in attempting to explain these shifts, and our re…
A Comparative Statistical Analysis of Painted Pottery from Seven Halafian Sites
Archaeological and Paleoethnobotanical Investigations in Salts Cave, Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky
Reconnaissance, surface collecting, and test excavation were carried on in Salts Cave in August, 1963, by a joint Illinois State Museum-Cave Research Foundation expedition in cooperation with the National Park Service. Various analyses and secondary investigations have continued since then. The main upper passages of the cave were extensively visited during the last millennium B.C. by a prehistoric people who are probably to be assigned to the Ea…
The Theory and Practice of Ethnoarcheology with special reference to the Near East
Ethnoarcheology, broadly defined, refers to any use by archeologists of published or unpublished data drawn from ethnographie sources and used to aid archeological interpretation. Recently there has been a burst of interest among archeologists in obtaining relevant ethnographie data by undertaking fieldwork in living communities themselves. The theory and practice of ethnoarcheology are discussed, and a summary is provided of results from some re…

The covering law model in archaeology: Practical uses and formal interpretations
In a recent issue of World Archaeology, Charles Morgan criticized our book, Explanation in Archaeology. Carbon Dating Prehistoric Soot from Salts Cave, Kentucky
The interiors of two large Kentucky caves - Mammoth Cave and nearby Salts Cave, both within Mammoth Cave National Park - were much visited and utilized by prehistoric Indians. Large quantities of artifacts and numerous other evidences of human activity are still present in both caves, especially in undisturbed portions of Salts Cave. Most of the remains comprise perishable materials of vegetable fiber and wood, and plants or plant parts carried i…
