Effect of routine iron–folic acid supplementation among rural pregnant women living in low- and high-groundwater-iron areas in Bangladesh
Objective: The present study investigated the risks and benefits of routine Fe–folic acid (IFA) supplementation in pregnant women living in low- and high-groundwater-Fe areas in Bangladesh. Design: A case-controlled prospective longitudinal study design was used to compare the effect of daily Fe (60 mg) and folic acid (400 μg) supplementation for 3·5 months. Setting: A rural community in Bangladesh. Participants: Pregnant women living in low-grou…
Complications During Pregnancy, Delivery, and Postnatal Stages and Place of Delivery in Rural Bangladesh
The utilization of safe motherhood services including maternity care in Bangladesh is very poor. Only a very small proportion of deliveries takes place in a hospital/clinic. This study is based on data from a follow-up study on maternal morbidity in rural Bangladesh. Analysis is performed on the nature of complications by place of delivery. Most of the deliveries have taken place in the women's own or her mother's home. In addition, home deliveri…
Delivery complications and healthcare-seeking behaviour
Maternal health services have a potentially critical role in the improvement of reproductive health. The use of health services is related to the availability, quality and cost of the services, as well as to social structure, health beliefs and the personal characteristics of the users. The present paper examined the factors that influence the use of maternal health services for some selected pregnancy-related complications (e.g. prolonged labour…

Utilisation of postnatal care in Bangladesh
Utilisation of health services is a complex behavioural phenomenon. Empirical studies of preventive and curative services in Bangladesh have often showed that the use of health services is related to the availability, quality and cost of services, as well as to social structure, health beliefs and personal characteristics of the users. The present paper attempts to examine factors associated with the utilisation of healthcare services during the …
Foreign Domestic Workers in Kuwait
The percentage of Kuwaiti households with at least one foreign domestic worker increased from 13 percent in 1977/79 to 87 percent in 1999. This paper describes the workers' characteristics, their workload and attributes of the households they live in. Predictors of the number of domestic workers employed by households are examined by using multinomial logistic regression. Households that employ at least one domestic worker have a larger number of…
Infant and child mortality levels and trends in Bangladesh
Infant and child mortality levels and trends in Bangladesh are examined using data from the 1989 Bangladesh Fertility Survey. Both infant and child mortality declined from the mid 1970s but infant mortality declined more quickly. The level of infant mortality in 1989 was around 100 per 1000 live births while child mortality (5 q ) was 200 per 1000 live births. Life table analysis confirms the change in infant and child mortality. The decline in i…
Decentralized Data Management in Nutritional Surveillance for Timely Warning and Intervention
In this paper we describe a theoretical approach for decentralized data management in sentinel community nutritional surveillance systems for timely warning and intervention, by using customized computer programs. By making the data available at lower levels first, the decentralized data management system builds the institutional capacity at regional, level and allows rapid and appropriate action by decision-makers. In addition, it facilitates th…
