Childhood obesity, dental crowding, and dental arch dimensions
Childhood obesity influences timing of dental development and eruption, with some researchers suggesting that earlier dental development in children and adolescents with obesity may cause increased dental crowding. The aim of this study is to investigate the association of childhood obesity with dental crowding and arch width. Subjects were recruited from the University of Illinois Chicago’s College of Dentistry’s Orthodontic Clinic (n=148) and c…
Patterns of morphological integration in the dental arches of individuals with malocclusion
This study provides evidence for patterns of variation in dental arch shape found in individuals with Class II and Class III malocclusions. Moreover, differences in integration found between malocclusion types have ramifications for how such conditions should be studied and treated. Am. J. Hum. Freedom: A Documentary History of Emancipation, 1861–1867
This book examines the remaking of the South's labor system in the tumultuous aftermath of emancipation. Using documents selected from the National Archives, this volume depicts the struggle of unenfranchised and impoverished ex-slaves to control their own labor, establish their families as viable economic units, and secure independent possession of land. Among the topics addressed are the dispossession of settlers in the Sherman reserve, the reo…
Assessing mandibular shape variation within Gigantopithecus using a geometric morphometric approach
This study provides a survey of mandibular shape in a sample of extant hominoids ( Pan , Gorilla , Pongo , and Hylobates ), as well as extinct Asian and Eurasian taxa ( Ouranopithecus , Sivapithecus , and Gigantopithecus ) in order to compare overall shape similarity. Results presented call into question differences in mandible shape recently used to distinguish Gigantopithecus giganteus from Gigantopithecus blacki and to justify resurrecting a d…

The Black Military Experience, 1861–1867
F reedom came to most American slaves only through force of arms. The growing Northern commitment to emancipation availed nothing without victory on the battlefield. But once federal policy makers had committed the Union to abolishing slavery, the Northern armies that eroded Confederate territory simultaneously expanded the domain of freedom. The Union army perforce became an army of liberation, and as it did, both the Northern public and the fre…
