  • Grammaticalization

    Open Access•Benjamin Fagard, Jean-Michel Fortis•ARTICLE•Histoire Épistémologie Langage•2025•Referencias: 10

We describe the emergence and evolution of grammaticalization—as term and concept —in the 19th and 20th centuries. We analyze Meillet’s use of the concept of grammaticalization against the backdrop of other important figures (e.g. Bopp, Vossler, Spitzer), in order to better understand Meillet’s specific contribution to the field. We then investigate the impact of his 1912 article, by analyzing the use of the term grammaticalization in the literat…

  • Deictic directionals revisited in the light of advances in typology

Christine Lamarre, Alice Vittrant et al.•CHAPTER•Neglected Aspects of Motion…•2022

This study explores the issue of Associated Motion (hereafter AM) in five languages spoken in Africa and Asia. We investigate grammatical morphemes whose function is to add a motion process to the event encoded in the verb expressing the main (non-motion) event, and to specify the temporal sequence of these two events ( motion-prior-to-action or motion-subsequent-to-action) . We show that an AM analysis adequately accounts for the function of mor…

  • Source/Goal (a)symmetry

    Open Access•Benjamin Fagard, Anetta Kopecka•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2021

This paper compares the expression of Source and Goal in German and Polish, on the basis of descriptions elicited with a series of video clips. As satellite-framed languages ( Talmy 1985 , 2000 ), both German and Polish mainly rely on grammatical morphemes to encode Path of motion with respect to Source and Goal. Nevertheless, despite this shared typological feature, these languages also display fine morphosyntactic and semantic differences. Our …

    Benjamin Fagard, Karolina Krawczak•ARTICLE•Langages•2017

  • The Expression of Motion Events

Open Access•Benjamin Fagard, Jordan Zlatev et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual Meeting…•2013

In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt:More than two decades of intense research on motion event typology, emanating from the influential proposal of Talmy (1991, 2000) of a universal binary classification of languages into verb-framed (VF), such as French, and satellite-framed (SF), such as English, still leaves many questions unresolved. One such question is whether serial-verb languages such as Thai should be considered a third type (…

  • De ante à devant et avant

    Benjamin Fagard•ARTICLE•Langages•2012

  • Alors between discourse and grammar

Liesbeth Degand, Benjamin Fagard•ARTICLE•Functions of Language•2011

This paper presents an in-depth study of the semantics of the French discourse marker alors ‘at that time, then, so’. Its evolution from temporal adverbial with local anaphoric meaning to polysemous marker including conversation management uses in spoken French is traced through a systematic diachronic corpus analysis. Of particular interest in this perspective is the relationship between the different meanings of alors and the position it occupi…

  • Historical and comparative perspectives on subjectification

  • Prépositions et locutions prépositionnelles

    Benjamin Fagard•ARTICLE•Langages•2009

The issue addressed in this paper is the semantics of simple vs complex (or synthetic vsanalytic) expressions, in particular that of complex prepositions in Medieval French. We present the categorial structure of prepositions in Old and Middle French, and go on to show,on the basis of a corpus study of a few simple and complex prepositions, that the latter are indeed less polysemous than simple prepositions, as one could await, but nevertheless d…
