Feeling things happen”
This article discusses the tension often experienced in "Arts for Peace" programmes between the desire meaningfully to evaluate a creative process and the need to account to funders for the delivery of pre-determined expected outcomes that makes no allowance for discoveries made as the project unfolds. Taking the EU-funded Theatre and Peace-building Academy programme (2018-2020) as its case-study, it reflects on the efficacy of the arts to engage…
Doing Authenticity
Authenticity has been a focus of much leadership research in recent years. Despite this interest, there has been a dearth of studies that explore the role of gender in the social construction of authenticity. To date, authentic leadership theories have tended to be either gender neutral or, where gender has been considered, it is argued that women as ‘outsiders’ are less likely to be accepted by their followers as authentic leaders. This is despite evidence that Internet use is booming, that news forms have changed online, and that reading news is a popular activity on the new media. The Internet challenges our understanding of defamation. Since the Internet crosses national boundaries it is very difficult to determine the jurisdiction of…
Deep Breaths on Paper
Calls for more attention to social work student writing have gone largely unanswered in the literature and, it can be assumed, in the classroom. An emphasis on writing skills will help prepare students for active and effective advocacy in their practices and in policy arenas. To assure social work instructors that writing instruction, like writing, is no mysterious and impossible chore, this article introduces three key concepts of composition th…
Trade unions, political funds ballots and party political funding
The Trade Union Act 1984 compels trade unions with political funds to hold a ‘review ballot’ every 10 years if they wish to retain them. Unions argue that without a political fund they could not finance any of their political activities or campaigns. This would particularly affect the trade union movement's long association with the Labour Party, to which 35 unions currently affiliate. Between February 1993 and November 2000 all 40 unions with a …

Substance abuse has devastating effects on the lives of African-American children and adolescents who are both directly and indirectly victims of this problem. This article discusses child and adolescent substance abuse from a psychosocial developmental perspective within an Africentric paradigm. The authors explore contributing and intervention factors related to substance abuse that impact developmental milestones. They delineate preventive tac…
Immigration Patterns, Social Support, and Adaptation Among Korean Immigrant Women and Korean American Women
There are little empirical data available on the mental health and social functioning of Korean American Women (both native U.S. born and foreign Korean-born U.S. residents, inclusive). State-of-the-art research used to inform social work practice is exploratory descriptive. With the goal of contributing to the social work knowledge base regarding this understudied population, this article uses an emic understanding and approach to examine immigr…
