Cinematic Affects in War
This paper offers a reading of Mantas Kvedaravičius’ research findings from the perspective of visual anthropology. The paper describes the continuities between Kvedaravičius’ theoretical concerns on the anthropology of war and his filmmaking approach. These continuities imply an epistemological position that approaches research cinematically and proceeds to write from that position. Kvedaravičius’ work is illustrative of research that takes audi…
Transinsular Networks of the Caribbean Seascape
This paper examines the sea as a metonym for visualising the Caribbean island experience. This paper argues that islanders' relations with the sea are maintained through a double condition of connection and isolation, alienation and familiarity. This paper's theoretical position is informed by 'transinsularism', an approach that addresses how insular identities are constituted in relation to other island spaces. Some double tasks of ethnography and anthropology
Caribbean Insular Mobilities
The article examines the role that processes suggestive of 'mobility' and 'insularity' have played in research that has concerned itself with the constitution of Caribbean island identities. Historically, the relationship between these two concepts has suggested a contradiction or a paradox to unravel. Here, the author reviews core concepts in Caribbeanist research and places 'mobility' and 'insularity' in conversation with each other, arguing th…
Picturing Transnationalism
This research report addresses epistemological issues confronted in the ongoing process of making an ethnographic documentary about transnationalism. It begins by considering the use of cinematic vocabulary as an analogy to narrativise the complexities of transnationalism. It then contextualises a specific documentary project within methodological debates in the ethnographic film-making community. Keywords: ethnographic documentary, visual method…
Contesting Visions of Caribbean Landscapes
This article examines the social contests that arose out of a series of state-sponsored tourism development projects on the Caribbean island of Culebra. The article will be focusing on how Culebra's tourism debates shed light on the complex social definitions of the island's space and its delimitations. The island's discursive location—as part of the paracolonial state of Puerto Rico, with a significant population from the US and Europe, and a so…
