Tracking Economic Activity With Alternative High‐Frequency Data
Monthly macroeconomic series captured the sharp fluctuations during the COVID‐19 pandemic only with a lag. The use of alternative high‐frequency data is promising for crisis periods, but it is difficult to extract relevant business cycle information from them. We present a Bayesian mixed‐frequency dynamic factor model with stochastic volatility for measuring GDP growth at high‐frequency intervals. Its novelty is an additional state‐space block, i…
Global and local components of output gaps
This paper proposes a multi-level dynamic factor model to identify common components in output gap estimates. We pool multiple estimates for 157 countries and decompose them into one global, eight regional, and 157 country-specific cycles. Our approach easily deals with mixed frequencies, ragged edges, and discontinuities in the underlying output gap estimates. To restrict the parameter space in the Bayesian state space model, we apply a stochast…
New Insights into Coalition Negotiations—The Case of German Government Formation
Research on coalition negotiations after general elections in parliamentary systems usually focuses on the parties’ utility maximization as corporate actors. However, the most recent process of government formation after the German general election in 2017 followed a different type of logic and led to an outcome unlike that of other coalition negotiations. Regarding policy seeking, office seeking, and vote seeking, the outcomes of both the explor…
