Remembering the Empire
This article analyzes the Spanish film 1898: Los últimos de Filipinas (2016) by director Salvador Calvo, a dramatization of an episode of the Spanish-American War. Several critics have read the film as a nuanced and anti-patriotic adaptation of this historical event, in contrast to the Francoist propaganda film Los últimos de Filipinas (1945) by Antonio Román. Drawing on the term “imperial amnesia”, we argue that the film patriotically highlights…
Archive and Authenticity
The film El abrazo de la serpiente (2015) by Colombian director Ciro Guerra has been praised for its decolonial and ecological aesthetics. In this article I problematize these readings by arguing that the film, through its references to the archive of Amazonian photography and writing, works to satisfy touristic desires for contact with an ‘authentic’ Other, expressed most clearly in the indigenous shaman character, Karamakate. The film’s tourist…

El discurso nacionalista mexicano en el cómic Águila Solitaria de Víctor Fox
This article examines how the Mexican comic Águila Solitaria, published in the second half of the 1970s and throughout the 1980s, incorporates themes related to the Mexican postrevolutionary nationalist discourse (especially as presented in the works of José Vasconcelos and Manuel Gamio) to avoid censorship related to the representation of sex and violence and, at the same time, to achieve economic success. This is done first and foremost through…
The Civic Cycles
Religion, Power, and Resistance from the Eleventh to the Sixteenth Centuries
Catholic England
Using original source material, This book seeks to explore the nature of religious belief and practice in pre-Reformation England. For most people in England the main access to the Bible, and indeed to instruction in the faith, would be through hearing priests from their pulpits. The book demonstrates with immediacy and potency the diverse expressions of faith and observance. It discusses the varieties of spirituality in later medieval England an…

Poverty's Proprietors
The Other Friars
In 1274 the Council of Lyons decreed the end of various 'new orders' of Mendicants which had emerged during the great push for evangelism and poverty in the thirteenth-century Latin Church. The Franciscans and Dominicans were explicitly excluded, while the Carmelites and Austin friars were allowed a stay of execution. These last two were eventually able to acquire approval, but other smaller groups, in particular the Friars of the Sack and Pied F…

Religious Identities in Henry VIII's England
Before the Protestant Clergy
The Reformation signals a crux in the history of the western clergy. As medieval Catholicism dissolved, confessionalization generated new ministries, and a major shift in appreciations produced new conceptions of clerical roles and functions. The clergy, both Catholic and Protestant, became more professional and self-consciously elite cadres.1 KeywordsPastoral CareThirteenth CenturyCatholic PriesthoodCanonical CodeCatholic ClergyThese keywords we…
Indulgences at Norwich cathedral priory in the later middle ages
Indulgences were a vital element in late medieval English religion, but evidence of their attractiveness is limited. Material from the sacrists' rolls of Norwich cathedral priory offers information to cast light on their local appeal, changing over time yet open to manipulation and exploitation. Records of offerings at shrines and images within the cathedral also provide comparative figures to set the scale of indulgence receipts in perspective
