Exploring Match Space: How Medical School and Specialty Characteristics Affect Residency Match Geography in the United States
PURPOSE: To explore how school and specialty characteristics impact the geographic match location of U.S. senior medical students. METHOD: The authors collected student match data between 2018 and 2020 from U.S. MD-granting medical schools and calculated the distance between students' medical schools and residency training programs. They use the term "match space" to describe this distance. Match space was codified on a 5-point ordinal scale by w…
Curbing the Credit Cycle
Credit cycles have been a characteristic of advanced economies for over 100 years. On average, a sustained pick‐up in the ratio of credit to GDP has been highly correlated with banking crises. The boom phases of the cycle are characterised by large deviations in credit from trend. A range of mechanisms can generate these effects, each of which has strategic complementarity between banks at its core. Macro‐prudential policy could curb these credit…
Trade Flows, Multilateral Resistance, and Firm Heterogeneity
Anderson and van Wincoop (2003) showed the importance of multilateral resistance general equilibrium effects in estimating the response of trade flows to trade costs. We integrate this into Helpman, Melitz, and Rubinstein's (2008) extension of Anderson and van Wincoop's framework, which allows for firm heterogeneity, in order to quantify the different margins of adjustment. For bilateral trade cost changes, the general equilibrium effects are sma…

Max Weber's 'Author's Introduction' (1920): A Master Clue to his Main Aims
The prominent recent repetition of a widespread miscue on the date and description of Weber's magisterial Author's Introduction to the Collected Essays in the Sociology of Religion may serve as an apt point of departure for this essay which I happily dedicate to Talcott Parsons. Apart from his other writings to which only passing reference is made in the present essay, Prof. Parsons' Structure of Social Action and his annotated translation of Web…

Is the Sociology of Religion Possible? A Reply to Robert Bellah
Professor Bellah appears to cut the ground from under the study of religion by insisting that all scientific efforts to advance the understanding of religion through sociology or psychology have regularly proven-and must regularly prove-failures. It is precisely the most influential studies of religion by the most renowned social scientists which reveal themselves on close gaze to be reductionisms of or another form; all such views treat religion…
