Coerced and adolescent sex industry involvement are linked to serious health and social consequences, including enhanced risk of HIV infection. Using ethnographic fieldwork, including interviews with 30 female sex workers with a history of coerced or adolescent sex industry involvement, we describe contextual factors influencing vulnerability to coerced and adolescent sex industry entry and their impacts on HIV risk and prevention. • Receptivity to cigarette and tobacco control messages and adolescent smoking initiation

Kristen Emory, Kristen T Emory et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2014

Receptivity to tobacco control advertising appeared to ameliorate the promotion of initiation from cigarette advertising. Anti-industry advertising appears to be the most effective counter for tobacco control and should be considered for wider use. A larger longitudinal study is needed to confirm these findings

Responses to conflict included voicing concerns, display…

  • Immigrant Family Strengths

    Open Access•Paula M Usita, Rosemary Blieszner•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2002•Cited by: 8•References: 13

The literature on immigrants punctuates their difficulties with language acculturation and communication. Minimal attention has been given to the diversity of immigrant family communication issues in relation to the receiving communities in which they have lived, and research has not assessed immigrant families' strategies for minimizing communication breakdown. Based on in-depth interviews with 20 immigrant mothers and their adult daughters, we …

  • Adulthood and Aging

Paula M Usita•REVIEW•Journal of Marriage and the Family•1997

In this volume distinguished scholars explore and apply the theoretical models of continuity and discontinuity to their research in adult development. The chapters address the different ways in which continuity is affected by change over the life course, as well as how individuals negotiate and maintain crucial continuities by adaptive change. Topics include adult life crises, illness, sibling relationships, and gender identity. Each chapter is f…

  • Diversity and Dynamics in Late-Life Mother-Daughter Relationships

Rosemary Blieszner, Paula M Usita et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Women & Aging•1996

We employed gerontological and feminist frameworks in an investigation of normative late-life mother-daughter relationships. Building on previous research, we used data from a representative sample of older mothers to explore in depth the predictors of relationship quality and the satisfactions and complaints prevalent in relationships with mothers in later life. Structured interview data revealed that the intimacy dimension of relationship quali…

  • Predictive Validity of the 16 PF in Screening Volunteers for Big Brothers/Big Sisters

    Open Access•Keith C Herman, Keith Herman et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1994

Inappropriate volunteers were portrayed as rigid, anxious, apprehensive, and lacking judgment. Self-assurance, flexibility, intelligence, and perseverance were characteristics associated with appropriate volunteers
