  • GenAI-enabled versus human assessment of written assignments

Open Access•Shuheng Lin, Grace Ngai et al.•ARTICLE•Innovations in Education and…•2026

This study examines the consistency and agreement between generative AI (GenAI)-enabled and human assessments of written assignments in a teacher development course on service-learning. • Misconceptions and understanding of service-learning among secondary school teachers in Hong Kong

Open Access•Grace Ngai, Zhuoheng Luo et al.•ARTICLE•Teachers and Teaching•2025

Service-learning is a high-impact academic practice that effectively nurtures a wide range of learning outcomes, including some which are difficult to achieve in traditional classroom settings. This makes service-learning very attractive as a learning pedagogy for developing students’ holistic learning outcomes. However, the nature of service-learning makes it easily conflated with similar civic learning activities, such as community service or v…

  • The impact of mandatory academic service-learning on university graduates’ continual civic engagement

Open Access•Shuheng Lin, Grace Ngai et al.•ARTICLE•Higher Education Research &…•2025

There is growing interest among higher education institutions in employing service-learning to nurture students’ civic-mindedness and sense of citizenship. However, it remains unclear whether the civic outcomes observed in short-term studies are sustained, particularly when service-learning is a compulsory requirement. This study leverages a curriculum reform in a large public research university in Hong Kong to examine the impact of mandatory ac…

  • A Large-Scale Study of Students’ E-Service-Learning Experiences and Outcomes During the Pandemic

Open Access•Grace Ngai, Ka Hing Lau et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Experiential Education•2024

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in strict social distancing and lockdown measures to contain the spread of the disease. These measures significantly impacted experiential pedagogies, including service-learning. Many teachers pivoted to e-service-learning. While past literature suggests that e-service-learning is as, or even more effective than, traditional service-learning, there are few large-scale comparative studies that support thi…

  • Service-Learning Exchange in Developed Cities

Open Access•Rina Marie Camus, Cindy H Y Lam et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Experiential Education•2022

Background: The context of learning, which includes the host country, is an important variable of service-learning. Since international service-learning programs often take place in developing countries, studies about their impact and outcomes commonly draw from experiences in developing countries. Purpose: We investigate service-learning experience in developed, urban settings focusing on dissonances and civic outcomes, key areas of service-lear…

  • Enhancing the impacts of international service-learning on intercultural effectiveness and global citizenship development through action research

Stephen C F Chan, Grace Ngai et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Action Research•2022

This paper reports the results of an action research project on improving students’ learning from international service-learning. Participants were two consecutive cohorts of university students enrolled in nine international service-learning projects. Mixed-method findings from the first cohort reveal significant increases in their global competence and intercultural effectiveness but not their social responsibility or global civic engagement. T…

  • How Participation Affects University Students’ Perspectives Toward Mandatory Service-Learning

    Open Access•Stephen C F Chan, Grace Ngai et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Experiential Education•2021

Background: Educators have divided and often strongly held views on whether service-learning should be required of all students. However, studies examining students’ view on mandatory service-learning are limited in the literature. Purpose: This article contrasts and examines students’ views toward a service-learning requirement at a Hong Kong university before and after attending a mandatory service-learning course, and any resulting changes. Me…
