  • A new perspective on fluctuating odontometric asymmetry in South African Negroes

    Open Access•H T Groeneveld, Julius A Kieser•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1991

The present communication introduces a novel statistical method by means of which fluctuating odontometric asymmetry may be broken up into two components: shape and size. This method is then applied to the odontometric data of 106 urban South African Negroes in order to test the postulate that there might be a difference between the levels of shape and size asymmetry. The data show that both components are present. Additionally, it is shown that …

  • Tooth size and the Carabelli trait

    Open Access•C Reid, J F Van Reenen et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1991•Cited by: 16•References: 6

The Carabelli trait and its association with maxillary molar crown base and cusp size was studied in a group of 128 Kwengo, a San‐Negro hybrid community living in Western Caprivi, Namibia. The trait was classified according to a modification of the scheme put forward by Dahlberg and by Scott (In: Dental Anthropology. New York: Pergamon, 1963) (Hum. Biol. 52:63–78, 1980). Crown base areas were larger in trait‐positive than in trait‐negative molars…

  • Measurement error in human dental mensuration

    Open Access•Julius A Kieser, H T Groeneveld et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1990

The reliability of human odontometric data was evaluated in a sample of 60 teeth. Three observers, using their own instruments and the same definition of the mesiodistal and buccolingual dimensions were asked to repeat their measurements after 2 months. Precision, or repeatability, was analysed by means of Pearsonian correlation coefficients and mean absolute error values. Accuracy, or the absence of bias, was evaluated by means of Bland-Altman p…

  • Allocation and discrimination based on human odontometric data

    Open Access•Julius A Kieser, H T Groeneveld•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1989•Cited by: 1•References: 13

This study contrasts the confience with which individuals may be grouped and then re‐allocated on the basis of odontometric data. These data are derived from the mesiodistal and buccolingual diameters of 202 Len‐gua Indians of Paraguay (100 males, 102 females), 125 Caucasoid schoolchildren (59 male, 66 female), and 206 Negroes (106 male, 100 female). Multivariate intergroup discrimination is effected by means of canonical and stepwise discriminan…

  • Patterns of metric variability in the dentition of Papio ursinus

    Open Access•Julius A Kieser, H T Groeneveld•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1988

The present investigation assesses a number of explanations for the patterns of variability in dental dimensions. Coefficients of variation were calculated for mesiodistal and buccolingual diameters in a sample of 105 Papio ursinus crania (52 male, 53 female). Variability profiles consisting of arrays of values of coefficients of variation were evaluated by means of Friedman's two‐way analysis of variance and Kendall's coefficient of concordance.…

  • Relationship of lung function loss to level of initial function: Correcting for measurement error using the reliability coefficient

    Les Irwig, H T Groeneveld et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1988•References: 17

The regression of lung function change on the initial lung function level is biased when the initial level is measured with random error. Several methods have been proposed to obtain unbiased estimates of regression coefficients in such circumstances. We apply these methods to examine the relationship between lung function loss over 11 years and its initial level in 433 men aged about 20 when first seen. • Allometric relations of teeth and jaws in man

    Open Access•Julius A Kieser, H T Groeneveld•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1988•Cited by: 6•References: 55

Static adult intraspecific allometry of jaws and teeth was investigated in a sample of 100 Negro crania. The relations between tooth area, postcanine surface, incisor surface, and four viscerocranial measures were examined separately for males and females. Our results indicate a marked lack of morphological integration between P‐sets within the orofacial subregion and a similar lack of correspondence between jaw size and tooth size. Allometric an…

  • Evidence for a secular trend in the Negro dentition

Open Access•Julius A Kieser, Noël Cameron et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1987

Metric changes in the Negro dentition were evaluated in a sample of artificial stone casts of the dental arcades of 106 living South African Negroes (56 males, 50 females) and in 100 Negro crania (50 males, 50 females) drawn from the R. A. Dart Collection. Comparison of the mesiodistal and buccolingual dimensions of these two samples to the published results of a similar study on earlier Negroes revealed a statistically significant trend towards …

  • An evaluation of the M-statistic in human odontomorphometric distance analyses

    Open Access•H T Groeneveld, Julius A Kieser•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1987•Cited by: 3•References: 1

The usefulness of the M-statistic in odontomorphometric distance analyses was evaluated against a battery of more traditional metrics, which included Mahalanobis' D2, Penrose's shape metric, the Manhattan distance and Delta. Odontometric data used for the analyses were derived from 202 Paraguayan Lengua Indians and 125 contemporary caucasoids. Efron's Bootstrap procedure was used to evaluate the statistical accuracy of the different metrics, when…

  • Tooth size and arcadal length correlates in man

    Open Access•Julius A Kieser, H T Groeneveld•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1987•Cited by: 5•References: 2

Intra-arcadal mesiodistal and buccolingual tooth size correlations were evaluated in a sample of 125 caucasoids with ideal occlusion. Dental dimensions were corrected for arcade mength (as a measure of jaw size) by a series of regression analyses of each mesiodistal dimension on the sum of the mesiodistal dimensions within each arcade. Regression coefficients of tooth dimension on arcade length were calculated to gain an insight into the dimensio…

  • Fluctuating odontometric asymmetry in the Lengua Indians of Paraguay

    Open Access•Julius A Kieser, H T Groeneveld et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1986

Fluctuating dental asymmetry was evaluated as an indicator of environmental stress in a group of 202 living Lengua Indians from the Paraguayan Chaco area. Older, less accultured individuals were shown to be significantly more asymmetric than younger individuals who had been increasingly exposed to western foodstuffs and medicine. Lengua Indians demonstrated similar levels of asymmetry to another preliterate group, the Ticuna Indians of Columbia, …

  • Fluctuating dental asymmetry as a measure of odontogenic canalization in man

    Open Access•Julius A Kieser, H T Groeneveld et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1986•Cited by: 14•References: 38

Fluctuating odontometric asymmetry was evaluated in 202 Lengua Indians and in 125 contemporary caucasoids using Euclidean map analyses, rescaled asymmetry values, and Naperian logarithmic transformations. Both populations showed bimodal distributions of canalizing ability, with significantly more Lengua Indians being less well canalized. Student t‐tests indicated that significant interpopulation differences in rescaled asymmetry values centered a…

  • Age related tooth size variation in the Lengua Indians of Paraguay

    Julius A Kieser, H T Groeneveld et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Morphologie und…•1985

Patterns of tooth size reduction were evaluated in a sample of 202 living Lengua Indians from the Chaco area of Paraguay. The preliterate status of older individuals provided a useful base for comparisons with younger age groups who had been increasingly exposed to Western foodstuffs. A definite trend towards tooth size reduction in younger Lenguas was demonstrated. Canonical and stepwise discriminant analyses isolated statistical significance of…

  • Patterns of dental wear in the Lengua Indians of Paraguay

    Open Access•Julius A Kieser, H T Groeneveld et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1985•Cited by: 16•References: 22

Wear patterns were examined on dental casts of 202 living Lengua Indians from the Chaco area of Paraguay. Consideration was given to the development of the molar helicoidal plane, age‐related changes in occlusal attrition, coalescence of dentine exposures, interproximal attrition, and erupted crown height. This study lends support to Osborn's theory of the helicoidal plane development by showing that attrition enhances rather than modifies poster…
