Women, Rice, and War
Italy's invasion of Ethiopia in 1935 brought about a swift response from residents in Abeokuta and across Nigeria. In meetings in churches, schools, and gathering spaces groups met to decry the invasion, sign petitions to the governor of Nigeria, and collect funds for Ethiopian relief. B Y the twentieth century, the southern Yoruba town of Abeokuta was integrated into the international economy both as an exporter of cash crops and an importer of manufactured products.
