  • Tracking individual dietary choices in complex past food webs

Open Access•Magdalena Krajcarz, Kyungcheol Choy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2026

Reconstructing dietary strategies in past urban environments is challenging because of the complexity of anthropogenic impacts on food webs, in which diverse local and imported resources with variable isotopic compositions limit the interpretive power of conventional bulk-collagen stable isotope analysis. We address this problem using domestic cats as dietary proxies, exploiting their opportunistic foraging behavior to track resource partitioning…

  • Ciepłe revisited

Open Access•ławomir Wadyl, Weronika Bałdyga et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2025•Referências: 1

New research at Ciepłe, a unique early-medieval centre in northern Poland, reveals a Piast-era complex with three strongholds, elite chamber graves and far-reaching connections. Founded in the late tenth century AD, Ciepłe challenges traditional models of Pomeranian integration, offering fresh perspectives on early medieval state formation, frontier strategy and cross-cultural interactions

  • After the fall of the Egyptian Empire

    Open Access•Łukasz Jarmużek, Agnieszka Ryś-Jarmużek et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2024

Excavations at the site of Tell el-Retaba since 2007 have revealed an extensive settlement and associated material culture dating from the Third Intermediate Period (1070–664 BC). This work represents the only large-scale investigation into domestic archaeology from this period in Egypt and the results offer important insights into aspects of urban life for an under-studied phase of Egyptian history

  • Potential impact of Holocene climate changes on camel breeding practices of Neolithic pastoralists in the Central Asian drylands

    Open Access•Małgorzata Suska-Malawska, M Kot et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2022•Referências: 15

Archaeological findings from the Neolithic open-air location Ayakagytma ‘The Site’, situated in the south-eastern part of the Kyzyl-kum Desert in Uzbekistan, can potentially shed new light on the camel domestication process in the Central Asian drylands and help to connect it to regional changes of paleoclimate. Detailed analyses of composition and 13 C isotopic ratios of fatty acids performed on potsherds from an archaeological horizon of a Kelt…

The Kharā'ib al-Dasht settlement, located on the north-eastern coast of the island of Failaka in Kuwait, has been excavated systematically since 2013 by the Kuwaiti-Polish Archaeological Mission. The investigated area yielded remains dated to the Late Islamic period, from the late seventeenth to the nineteenth century. In the northernmost part of the site, a fish processing area was uncovered, while the remains of residential structures (houses 1…

  • On the Trail of the Oldest Domestic Cat in Poland. An Insight from Morphometry, Ancient DNA and Radiocarbon Dating

    Open Access•M Krajcarz, D Makowiecki et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016•Citada por: 2•Referências: 16

It is believed on the basis of archaeozoological research that the domestic cat appeared in Central Europe during the Roman Period. In Poland, the domestic cat is a common species in medieval deposits. Only a few finds of cat remains of pre-medieval age have been reported from Poland to date, including several specimens from deposits older than the Roman Period, dated to the pre-Roman Period and even the Bronze Age. To clarify the earliest histor…

  • Worked Human Femur from Gohar Tepe, Iran

    Open Access•A Sołtysiak, A Gręzak•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2015•Citada por: 1•Referências: 10

A simple tool made from a gracile human femoral shaft was retrieved from a small animal bone assemblage found in a Late Bronze Age stratum at Gohar Tepe, Iran. The specimen has been identified as a chisel or gouge for which no analogous examples are known in the Near East. Studies examining similar tools from other regions suggest that such a tool may have been used for wood processing or pottery smoothing. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
