  • Stories of Globalization: Transnational Corporations, Resistance, and the State

    Alessandro Bonanno, Douglas H Constance•BOOK•Stories of Globalization•2008

The economic and social outcomes of mid-twentieth-century Fordist capitalism were characterized by a decrease in the significance of distance and a shift in the dynamic of time. This "time-space compression" is one of the defining components of contemporary globalization. In their latest collaboration, Alessandro Bonanno and Douglas Constance provide an in-depth analysis of the origins and nature of globalization using the context of the agro-foo…

A synthesis of existing works on the broiler industry combined with new information documenting its global diffusion is used to develop the concept of the Southern Model. The analysis of events supports a flexible accumulation over flexible specialization interpretation of the globalization of the South…

This analysis employs the case of lysine price fixing involving the food-processing transnational corporation (TNC) Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) and Asian-based firms. In an 'economy and society' conceptual framework grounded in the sociology of agriculture and food, we investigate the powers and limits of TNCs in the global era. We argue that TNCs maintain significant powers which allow them to avoid the laws and regulations of nation-states. AD…

The globalization of socio-economic relations is a central topic of discussion in both the general literature on economy and society and in the area of food and agriculture. Building upon the literature on the crisis of Fordism, the globalization of the economy and society, and corporate crime, it is argued that Ferruzzi was involved in a systematic violation of laws. The analysis points to the fact that these behaviors are endemic to capitalism as they are rooted…
