My past and thoughts (with apologies to Alexander Herzen)
NOTE FROM THE EDITORCanadian Slavonic Papers occasionally publishes documents of historical significance, and we are happy to include among them memoirs and personal accounts of remarkable experiences that might not otherwise find an outlet. Ten years ago Norman Pereira, an emeritus professor of Russian history at Dalhousie University and long-time member of the Canadian Association of Slavists, published a first installment of his recollections …
Siberia: Myths and Realities
Janet Hartley’s Siberia: A History of The People is simultaneously a survey of the history of Siberia and its peoples from the 16th century to the present and a corrective to popular preconceptions. She succeeds on both counts for the most part, but more so for the first objective. Some of her conclusions with regard to the political history in particular are subject to closer scrutiny and possible objection. Nevertheless, the book is an importan…

Revisiting the Revisionists and Their Critics
Notes1. “Revisionism is not just one point of view; most broadly, it is the readiness to change your views. Historical interpretation is a work of the imagination, and the best history is bound to be revisionist” (Robert V. Daniels, “Comment: Revisionism Avant la Lettre,” Slavic Review 3, 2008, 705–10: 709). My usage of the term here is narrower, as indicated.2. Negative Images of Jews in Recent Russian Literature
This paper attempts to identify anti-Semitic themes in contemporary Russian literature, compare them to Imperial and Soviet precedents, and assess their significance and popularity at present. As the USSR collapsed, several factors combined to create an atmosphere conducive to the full and vulgar expression of anti-Semitism. The most important were the end of censorship of ethnic hate literature, the prominent role of Jewish oligarchs in the priv…
Work Ethics and the Collapse of the Soviet System
The goal of this historical survey at ten sites in Russia was to increase our understanding of changing work attitudes and behaviours during the Brezhnev and Gorbachev eras, and to assess how they were related to political loyalty to the Soviet system. A questionnaire was administered by Russian interviewers to 625 respondents at selected work sites in Moscow, its outlying regions, Samara, and St. Petersburg. We determined that there was evidence…

Soviet Work Attitudes and Politics, 1953–91: A Preliminary Historical Sociology
The main question investigated here is the extent to which Russian workers’ changing attitudes toward their labour contributed to the systemic political crisis of the Soviet regime during the latter part of the 1980s. The related issue of the workers’ understanding of what has been called the “social contract” between themselves and government is also explored. The goal is to assess the relationship between their political allegiance and historic…

White Power during the Civil War in Siberia (1918–1920): Dilemmas of Kolchak’s “War Anti-Communism”
in Siberia can best be understood as failure of what might be termed his Anti-Communism (WAC). That failure was essentially political, even more than military; it may be broken down usefully into a number of specific problems facing his administration in Omsk. My goal in this essay is to identify five main dilemmas confronting Kolchak government and to assess its response to them. For our purposes, WAC is to be understood as sum of policies follo…
