  • Russia’s Path toward Enlightenment: Faith, Politics, and Reason, 1500-1801. By G. M. Hamburg

James Cracraft•ARTICLE•Journal of Church and State•2017

This very big book is a well-conceived study of political thought in Russia over the three centuries indicated in its title. A relatively brief initial chapter, “Searching for Enlightenment,” sets out the author’s plan, which is to show how “the phenomenon we call the Russian Enlightenment” (p. 19) was a matter as much of historical continuities as it was of the discontinuities set in motion by the revolution of Peter the Great. This is followed …

  • History as Philosophy

    Open Access•James Cracraft•ARTICLE•History and Theory•2015•Cited by: 1

Historians have taken a beating in recent times from an array of critics troubled by our persistent unwillingness to properly theorize our work. This essay contends that their criticisms have generally failed to make headway among mainstream historians owing to a little noticed cognitive byproduct of our work that I call history as philosophy. In so doing I offer a novel defense of professional history as it has been understood and practiced in t…

Let us strive then to think well; that is the first principle of morality.Pascal, Pensées, 1670 ABSTRACTMost historians today have abandoned the aspiration to a kind of scientific objectivity in their work-pace their postmodernist critics. Yet we cling nonetheless, with a touch perhaps of hypocrisy, to the closely related standard of strict impartiality, or moral neutrality, in all that we do. This article argues that the latter is as obsolete, n…

  • A Berlin for Historians

    Open Access•James Cracraft•ARTICLE•History and Theory•2002•Cited by: 3

On his death in 1997 Isaiah Berlin was widely hailed as a leading philosopher of political liberalism. This article takes the position that Berlin's philosophical views, particularly those on freedom and cultural pluralism, can also be construed as a valuable guide for historians working in the present, "postmodernist" climate of debate. It further argues that Berlin's character and career, the subjects already of considerable critical inquiry, l…

A chance archival discovery prompted the question which forms the title of this article. Unfortunately, my attempts to answer the question soon revealed that the attribution to Feofan Prokopovich of the celebrated treatise,Pravda voli monarshei vo opredelenii naslednika derzhavy svoei (The Right of the Monarch's Will in Designating the Heir to His Realm), rests on sand.
