Relaxation oscillations in the history of business cycles from 1928 to 1941
To date no satisfactory reason has been given to explain why no economist succeeded in proposing a business cycle model with nonlinear oscillations before Richard Goodwin. This article investigates the attempts of economists to model endogenous macrodynamic fluctuations with relaxation oscillations before 1941. It clarifies a common error between self-maintained oscillations and relaxation oscillations. It demonstrates that Van der Pol’s work ope…

The Development of Financial Economics in France between the Mid-1970s and the Early 1980s
To date, little research has documented the international diffusion of financial economics. Financial economics was supposedly "introduced" in France in the 1970s. Some analysts have argued that it is an American author-Leonard J. Savage-who allowed French authors to rediscover Louis Bachelier's work, indicating that "a prophet is not without honor, save in his own country." The present article challenges this conventional narrative and studies f…
The Emergence of Econophysics
Financial economics and mathematical finance are the two traditional scientific disciplines that constitute modern financial theory. Although they still largely dominate modern financial theory, in the past few years a new "player" has increasingly been making itself felt and could lead to a rethinking of some of the theoretical foundations of modern financial theory. This new player is econophysics. Econophysics is a very recent movement that is…

Was There a "Vernacular Science of Financial Markets" in France during the Nineteenth Century? A Comment on Preda's "Informative Prices, Rational Investors
In a recent article in this journal, Alex Preda's article sheds new light on the emergence of financial economic works in the nineteenth century. It explains how models, graphical tools, and theoretical arguments used by academic science had emerged from rationalization and conceptualization developed outside the science. In the process, Preda's article introduced an intermediate step: "vernacular economics," which "is understood to comprise hete…
