The role of perceiving data as confirming or contradicting to expectations in data-based decisions
This article presents an empirical study with 125 university students that investigates the influence of perceiving a confirmation or a contradiction between expectations regarding a hypothetical experiment in physics and empirical evidence from measurement data on data-based decisions. The decisions were analysed for correctness (multiple choice) and for the quality of the justification (free response). The results show that perceiving empirical…
Learning to Learn
The current pilot study implemented a "Learning to Learn" (L2L) course designed to teach first-year college students about the science of how learning works, how to take ownership of their own learning, and how to effectively apply learning strategies to achieve their academic goals. A cognitive apprenticeship model was used in which students planned, executed, and evaluated strategy use in vivo during the course. Two sections of the course were …
A Model of Scientific Data Reasoning
Data reasoning is an essential component of scientific reasoning, as a component of evidence evaluation. In this paper, we outline a model of scientific data reasoning that describes how data sensemaking underlies data reasoning. Data sensemaking, a relatively automatic process rooted in perceptual mechanisms that summarize large quantities of information in the environment, begins early in development, and is refined with experience, knowledge, …
