Open Access•Meghana Vagwala, Susan Gonzalez et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Mental Health•2025

Reports high rates of depression and anxiety among community gender-based violence (GBV) counselors in India. • Explores how counselors experience and internalize structural failures as a personal emotional toll, often expressed through culturally situated idioms of distress • Demonstrates how institutional neglect and patriarchal structures shape the conditions of care and contribute to compassion fatigue. • Analyzes the moral dilemmas counselor…

  • Feasibility of a Low-Intensity Task-Shared Intervention for Common Mental Disorders in Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence in India: A Mixed Methods Study

Open Access•Abhijit Nadkarni, Devika Gupta et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2025•References: 4

Our mixed-methods study evaluated the acceptability and feasibility of a lay-counselor-delivered low-intensity psychosocial intervention for women who experienced intimate partner violence in India. We found statistically significant improvements in mental health outcomes like depression and anxiety. Participants also reported positive changes in thoughts, behavior, emotional management, relationships, self-care, and daily functioning. The use of…

Task-sharing holds promise for bridging gaps in access to mental healthcare; yet there remain significant challenges to scaling up task-sharing models. This formative study aimed to develop a digital platform for training non-specialist providers without prior experience in mental healthcare to deliver a brief psychosocial intervention for depression in community settings in Texas. A 5-step development approach was employed, consisting of: bluepr…

  • Unpacking the ‘black box’ of suicide: A latent class analysis predicting profiles of suicidal ideation in a longitudinal cohort of adolescent girls from India

    Open Access•Anushka R Patel, Kelly E Dixon et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

Introduction Indian women account for 37% of global suicide-related deaths. As suicide is a growing concern among adolescent girls, identifying the social determinants of suicide with this group targeted prevention. We selected social determinants that include intersectional identities and broader syndemics; we then used longitudinal data from a prospective cohort of adolescent girls from Northern India to classify them into unique profiles acros…

    Open Access•Anushka R Patel, Marko Kovačević et al.•ARTICLE•Transcultural Psychiatric…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 70

Clinical variation in the expression of panic disorder, depression and anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has have been documented across cultures. However, local (emic) cultural models that explain how people make sense of their illness experiences remain relatively understudied in India among trauma-exposed populations. Further, the integration of emic findings into clinical care is limited, underscoring the need for emic perspec…

  • Testing for Differences in the Reporting of Somatic Symptoms of Depression in Racial/Ethnic Minorities

    Open Access•John A Sauceda, Anushka R Patel et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education & Behavior•2021

We tested if Latinx and Black individuals are more likely to somaticize depression compared with their White counterparts. We analyzed 14,745 depression ratings from 4,101 people living with HIV from 2007 to 2014. We calculated the percentage of each depression score accounted for by somatic symptom items (e.g., feeling tired). We analyzed depression scores using generalized estimation equations, which accounts for repeated measures within each p…

  • Gender-based violence and suicidal ideation among Indian women from slums: An examination of direct and indirect effects of depression, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms

Open Access•Anushka R Patel, Shraddha Prabhu et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2021

Results align with research showing that CA-GBV is particularly pernicious and affects SI. While anxiety and PTSD symptoms are related to CA-GBV, results suggest the relative importance of depression severity in the relation between CA-GBV and SI. Screening for SI among GBV survivors and treating depression symptoms may reduce the risk of suicide. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
