  • Intelligence Gathering, Relazioni , and the Ars Apodemica

Open Access•David Scott Gehring, David Gehring•ARTICLE•Diplomacy and Statecraft•2022•Cited by: 1

This analysis considers some of the methods and purposes of gathering intelligence in sixteenth-century diplomacy. Regular despatches from ambassadors provided a steady stream of information, but of particular importance was the development of the formal relation, the relazione, pioneered in Venice and subsequently imitated elsewhere. Two imitations by English authors – Robert Beale and Daniel Rogers – are evaluated, one with a critical relations…

  • English Publications of German Protestantism during the Reign of Elizabeth I

David Scott Gehring, David Gehring•ARTICLE•Sixteenth Century Journal•2020

This article examines a wide range of theological writings by Germans and theologians trained in Germany published in England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1558–1603). It looks beyond Luther, Melanchthon, Calvin, and Bullinger to acknowledge the variety of German Protestant authors who found an audience among Elizabethans. The relative breadth of works published and republished in England at this time testifies to the latitude of Elizabe…

  • Martyrologists without Boundaries: The Collaboration of John Foxe and Heinrich Pantaleon

Open Access•Thomas S Freeman, David Scott Gehring et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Ecclesiastical…•2018

Amid the great Protestant martyrologies of the mid-sixteenth century, Heinrich Pantaleon's Martyrvm historia (1563) has been comparatively overlooked. This article argues that Pantaleon's martyrology acted as a capstone to the narrative framework of Protestant suffering and resistance. Pantaleon's command of vernacular languages gave him access to a wider range of material than other martyrologists, material which his Latin text made accessible t…

  • From the Strange Death to the Odd Afterlife of Lutheran England

    Open Access•David Scott Gehring, David Gehring•ARTICLE•The Historical Journal•2014•References: 63

Research on the relationship between England and Protestant Germany during the sixteenth century has recently experienced a revival. A significant area of concentration for confessional interests among Lutherans a century ago, Anglo-German relations took a backseat in Reformation historiography during the twentieth century, but during the last decade or so a host of scholars in the UK, Germany, and USA have once again turned their attention to th…

  • Elizabeth I’s Former Tutor Reports on the Parliament of 1559: Johannes Spithovius to the Chancellor of Denmark, 27 February 1559

Open Access•Simon Adams, David Scott Gehring et al.•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2013•Cited by: 3

The fragmentary nature of the evidence for the proceedings of the Parliament of 1559 is one of the more obvious reasons for the continuing debate over the Elizabethan religious settlement. Philip II’s representative, the count of Feria, whose reports have been in print for more than a century, has been the primary diplomatic source.1 As a consequence of the war with France, there was no French diplomatic representation at the English court. Howev…
