  • Adorno's Symphonic Space-Time and Beethoven's Time Travel in Space

    Daniel K L Chua, Daniel Chua•ARTICLE•New German Critique•2016•References: 7

Theodor W. Adorno's "theory of the symphony" is modeled on Beethoven's heroic symphonies; these works form the basis for Adorno's arguments against the broadcast of symphonies on radio. A "radio symphony," he claims, is not the same as the real thing and fails to deliver the true meaning of the music. The arguments are based on a peculiar configuration of space and time in the symphonies in which the temporal dimensions are so compressed that the…

  • Listening to the Other: A Counter-Cultural Ear in iPodic Times

    Open Access•Daniel K L Chua, Daniel Chua•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Musical…•2010

This response aims to widen the implications suggested by Bernd Wannenwetsch by exploring how music may promote a listening that breaks out of a monad-like subject

  • Beethoven's Other Humanism

    Daniel K L Chua, Daniel Chua•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Beethoven's Promethean image has been reenforced in recent scholarship by the idea of the "heroic." Although the escalation of the concept has been recognized as an act of selective hearing based on a handful of "heroic" works, Beethoven's Promethean identity is likely to remain because it embodies the ethical values of a particularly virulent strain of humanism; Beethoven is still employed today to mark the epochal events of human history-from t…

  • Rioting with Stravinsky: A Particular Analysis of the Rite of Spring

    Open Access•Daniel K L Chua, Daniel Chua•ARTICLE•Music Analysis•2007•Cited by: 6

The riot that greeted the Rite of Spring only found its analytical counterpart some 70 years after its première, with factions headed by Pieter van den Toorn, Richard Taruskin and Allen Forte. But the analytical tussle was hardly a genuine riot in as much the differing camps subscribed to a premise of authenticity in order to stabilise the work under a universal concept: the result was a Rite unified by theory. The scholars may have battled with …

  • The Galitzin Quartets of Beethoven: Opp. 127, 132, 130

    Daniel K L Chua, Daniel Chua•BOOK•Galitzin Quartets of Beethoven•1995

This study is an analysis of the first three of Beethoven's late quartets, Opp. 127, 132, and 130, commissioned by Prince Nikolai Galitzin. The five late quartets, usually considered as a group, were written in the same period as the Missa solemnis and the Ninth Symphony, and are among the composer's most profound musical statements. Daniel K. L. Chua believes that of the five quartets the three that he studies trace a process of disintegration, …
