  • A difficult and peculiar section’: Provincial Bus Company Workers, 1934-47

    There has been controversy about the relative importance of trade unions, employers, and the state in determining the development of national collective bargaining in the twentieth century. This analysis of the provincial bus industry suggests that historians underestimate the importance of trade unions in this process at their peril.     The National Busworkers' Association (NBA) broke away from the National Union of Railwaymen (NUR) in 1950 but, by 1954, the new union had all but collapsed. The feeling that busworkers' concerns were not taken seriously enough by the NUR precipitated the breakaway.
