RICHARD GREENING HEWLETr was born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1923. He attended Dartmouth College as a history major from 1941 to February 1943, when he entered the U.S. Army Air Force. In July I944, the U.S. Naval Magazine at Port Chicago, California, was devastated by the largest stuteside explosion during World War II.
