The roles of formal education (years of schooling) and nonformal education (mass media exposure and travel) in the acculturative process are examined by employing both qualitative and quantitative data. Modernization among Cakchiquel Maya
Modernization among Cakchiquel Maya on Panajachel, a Guatemalan town, is analyzed by combining a line drawing test with standardized interview schedules and field observations. A strong relationship was found between specific attitudes and behaviors, which also correlate significantly with general modernization and traditional variables. In these correlations there are two significant patterns: social and psychological variables are both the best…

Qualitative and quantitative data are used to analyze Protestantism and modernization in two differentially developed and exposed towns lying on opposite shores of Lake Atitlán, Guatemala. San Juan, the less developed and relatively isolated town, is inhabited predominantly by Tzutuhil Maya; Panajachel, the more developed and exposed town is inhabited by mainly Cakchiquel Maya but includes about one-third Ladinos.
