  • Approach to the Manufacturing Process and Firing Temperature of the Pre‐Hispanic Maya Pottery From the Yohaltun Valley, Campeche, Mexico

    Open Access•Y Espinosa‐Morales, I E Pech Pech et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•References: 46

Reconstructing Maya lifeways and technology is a current challenge in archaeology. The Yohaltun Valley shows valuable archaeological evidence of the Maya culture, but this site has been scarcely studied. In this work, various analytical techniques were used to discuss and elucidate the raw material, technology, and manufacturing process parameters of pre‐Hispanic Maya potsherds from the Yohaltun Valley in Campeche, Mexico, which had been stored a…

  • Composición y estructura arbórea de petenes en la Reserva de la Biosfera de Los Petenes, Campeche, México

    Open Access•Pedro Zamora-Crescencio, Jean-François Mas et al.•ARTICLE•Polibotánica•2015•References: 1

We analyzed the composition and vegetation structure of 11 petenes of the Reserva de la Biosfera de Los Petenes (RBLP), Campeche. In each peten we selected five 20 m x 20 m plots (400 m 2 , total 2000 m 2 ) where we recorded and measured all woody individuals with a diameter at breast height (DBH) 5cm. The structure of each peten was described based on relative values of density, frequency and dominance (RIVI), and the distribution of diameter cl…

  • Calakmul: Agent Risk and Sustainability in the Western Maya Lowlands

    Open Access•J D Gunn, William J Folan et al.•ARTICLE•Archeological Papers of the…•2014•References: 27

Great attention has been focused on the southern trade routes across the Yucatan Peninsula through Tikal but little to the potential for crossing through Calakmul further to the north. This chapter shows that a combination of topography and politics make the Calakmul corridor the more efficient transit route. The political turmoil generated by Teotihuacan's involvement in Lowland trade following C.E. 378 cascaded into centuries of conflict betwee…

  • Bajo Sediments and the Hydraulic System of Calakmul, Campeche, Mexico

    Open Access•J D Gunn, John E Fo et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2002•Cited by: 19•References: 7

Maya Lowlands climate researchers have set aside earlier beliefs that Maya civilization flourished in an unchanging environment. Analyses of river discharge, weather patterns, lake-bottom sediments, and settlement patterns reveal a highly variable climate, considerable diversity in local geology and soils, and a wide range of cultural adaptations tailored to distinctive subregional settings. Significant knowledge gaps remain. Among the unanswered…

  • Extending the Calakmul Dynasty Back in Time: A New Stela from a Maya Capital in Campeche, Mexico

    Open Access•Sophia Pincemin, Joyce Marcus et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•1998•Cited by: 10•References: 15

The 200-year period from A.D. 230 to 430 witnessed the transition from chiefdom to state in the Maya Lowlands and the founding of several early political dynasties. Considerable information on that era is known for major cities like Tikal and Copán, but we knew less about the Calakmul area until recently. Previously, Calakmul's earliest dated monument was Stela 43, carved at A.D. 514. On the other hand, Tikal's earliest text dated to A.D. 292, an…

  • Calakmul: New Data from an Ancient Maya Capital in Campeche, Mexico

In this paper we summarize more than a decade of interdisciplinary work at Calakmul, including (1) the mapping project, which has covered more than 30 km2; (2) the excavation project, which has uncovered major structures and tombs in the center of the city; (3) the epigraphic project, whose goal is to study the hieroglyphic texts and relate them to the archaeological evidence; (4) the analysis of the architecture, ceramics, and chipped stone to d…
