Jinty Nelson in Thirteen Articles
This collection gathers thirteen contributions by a number of historians, friends, colleagues and/or students of Jinty’s, who were asked to pick their favourite article by her and say a few words about it for an event held in her memory on 15 January 2025 at King’s College London. We offer this collection in print now for a wider audience not so much because it has any claim to be exhaustive or authoritative, but because taken all together these …
Lights, power and the moral economy of early medieval Europe
By the beginning of the early Middle Ages the convention that each church should have a light burning at all times on the altar was strongly established. This paper examines how elites promulgated this idea and benefitted from their ability to furnish lighting material (oil and wax) when this was becoming scarce and expensive. This seeming generosity helped to give the power of rulers a moral quality, but at the same time their insistence that to…
Materiality and cultural formation
The medieval world is often characterized as an entity bound together by shared theological certainties. With one eye fixed on salvation, medieval persons supposedly privileged the spiritual over the material and perceived their ecology and landscape but dimly, through ‘the idealized lens of doctrine and ritual’ according to Benjamin Graham, one of the authors in this themed issue of Early Medieval Europe. The five papers and one review article p…
East and West in the Early Middle Ages
This last decade has been a good one for the Merovingians, whose rehabilitation now seems complete after twelve hundred and fifty years of being compared unfavourably with their successors and supplanters, the Carolingians. Two books from 2014 and 2015, by Yaniv Fox and Constance Bouchard respectively, made the important case that, when stripped of Carolingian denigration, there is much to admire about Merovingian Francia in terms of religion, cu…
Recht und Konsens im frühen Mittelalter
This rich volume of fourteen papers proceeds from a meeting of the Konstanzer Arbeitskreis für mittelalterliche Geschichte. As the Foreword explains, this was the first meeting to involve both Historiker and Rechtshistoriker since Peter Classen organized the seminal Recht und Schrift conference in 1976. This volume compares well with the one that came out of the 1976 meeting, but for obvious reasons does not so much break new ground as pull toget…

all made sharp comments that made me reconsider key aspects of my argument. The anonymous readers for Duke University Press and my editor, Miriam Angress, have vastly improved the book with their careful attention to my argument and its implications. With such interlocutors, this book should be much better than it is; the fault for that, of course, is mine rather than theirs.I owe many people thanks for personal and professional support over the ye…
Settlement of Disputes in Early Medieval Europe
The Reform of the Frankish Church
Introduction
Hegel’s notion of a state of transformation, in which the present negates the past in favour of the future, is well suited to this period of European history. At our starting point around the year 500, we may still characterise European culture as ‘late antique’; by the year 700 we are firmly in the world of the Middle Ages. A transformation has apparently occurred. The idea that it is developing consciousness that calls changes into being is not…
The New Cambridge Medieval History
The first volume of The New Cambridge Medieval History covers the transitional period between the later Roman world and the early middle ages, c.500 to c.700. This was an era of developing consciousness and profound change in Europe, Byzantium and the Arab world, an era in which the foundations of medieval society were laid and to which many of our modern myths of national and religious identity can be traced. This book offers a comprehensive reg…
Marmoutier and Its Serfs in the Eleventh Century
The ‘Book of Serfs of Marmoutier’ recorded the dealings the monastery had with its serfs in the eleventh century. The eleventh century itself is said to have been a time in which there was a collapse of political authority. Political and judicial institutions are alleged to have been ‘privatised’ as part of the so-called ‘feudal revolution’ that was caused by the collapse of Carolingian authority. This view has often been challenged. The Marmouti…

The Settlement of Disputes in Early Medieval Europe
This is a collection of original essays on the settlement of disputes in the early middle ages, a subject of central importance for social and political history. Case material, from the evidence of charters, is used to reveal the realities of the settlement process in the behaviour and interactions of people - instead of the prescriptive and idealised models of law-codes and edicts. The book is not therefore a technical study of charters evidence…

The Work of Audoenus of Rouen and Eligius of Noyon in Extending Episcopal Influence from the Town to the Country in Seventh-Century Neustria
Held almost as an article of faith amongst Merovingian historians is a belief in the strength of the bishops’ position in the town in early Frankish society. Passages from the life of bishop Desiderius of Cahors are often used to illustrate the busy bishop at work in his town, responsible, it seems, for maintaining the town’s defences. The assumption of secular duties by the bishop has been charted by a German scholar—Claude—who shows how in many…
