  • The World Is So Full of a Number of Things: On Specification and Perceptual Learning

    Eleanor J Gibson•ARTICLE•Ecological Psychology•2003

Two basic concepts of James Gibson's ecological theory of perception are information and affordance. Discovering the information that specifies an affordance is a task confronting all of us and is an essential process in development. Information in the world is manifold and must be narrowed down to perceive what specifies an affordance. Perceptual learning is the process that we study to understand how this comes about

  • Perceiving the Affordances: A Portrait of Two Psychologists

  • Where Is the Information for Affordances

    Eleanor J Gibson•ARTICLE•Ecological Psychology•2000

Two questions have priority for a perception psychologist: What is perceived, and what is the information for it? What we perceive are the affordances of the world. Because perception is prospective and goes on over time, the information for affordances is in events, both external and within the perceiver. Hence, we must study perception of events if we would understand how affordances are perceived

  • Going Somewhere: An Ecological and Experimental Approach to Development of Mobility

    Eleanor J Gibson, Mark A Schumuckler•ARTICLE•Ecological Psychology•1989

This article formulates a framework for understanding mobility and how it develops. Research is summarized as a foundation for a theoretical framework. Studies are briefly described that deal with development of detection of a surface of support adequate for traversal, development of the ability to maintain equilib- rium during stance and bipedal locomotion, and development of guided locomo- tion on a path to a destination in a cluttered environm…

  • Infant perception of gestural contrasts: Prerequisites for the acquisition of a visually specified language

    Open Access•John J Carroll, Eleanor J Gibson•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•1986

Research is reported which investigated the ability of 4-month-old hearing infants to discriminate between gestures, derived from American Sign Language (ASL), that differ solely in terms of contrasts along underlying movement dimensions. Using an habituation–dishabituation task, it is shown that young infants can make such discriminations for global movement contrasts as well as contrasts along a single movement dimension. Thus, at four months, …

  • Perceptual learning: Differentiation or enrichment?

    James J Gibson, Eleanor J Gibson•ARTICLE•Psychological Review•1955

means different things to different psychologists. To some it implies that human perception is, in large part, learned—that we learn to see depth, for instance, or form, or meaningful objects. In that case the theoretical issue involved is how much of perception is learned, and the corresponding controversy is that of nativism or empiricism. To others the term implies that human learning is in whole or part a matter of perception—that learning de…
