The following text is an excerpted chapter from Noémie Grunenwald's book Sur les bouts de la langue and Traduire en féministe/s, a translation memoir written in French and devoted to Grunenwald's reflections translating 'as a feminist' from English into French. This chapter focusses on her experience translating identity markers such as 'blackness', 'butch', 'femme' and others and the difficulty of translating them into a gendered language such a…
Creative translation and translucinación in practice-based research and pedagogy
Translucinación is a term coined by Chilean poet Andrés Ajens to “describe how translation is a form of reading and writing that creates new work, new conversations” (Osman and Spahr iii). In this article, I tell a story of how I have adapted and expanded this term to experiment with translation practices that deviate from translational norms such as fidelity, accuracy and equivalence. Deviating from the norm opens it, shows its mechanisms, gaps …
Haunted readings of female gothic short stories
This article deploys a cut-up technique borrowed from the haunted, fictocritical writing of Anna Gibbs. Taking descriptions from parts of different haunted houses found in short stories of the female gothic , it reconstitutes a new house, that is both an architectural assemblage and a reading of the figure of the haunted house as it relates to both gothic studies and feminism. The article has been divided according to passages describing differen…

Outranspo is a group of international translators, scholars, and writers who work playfully in-between languages. They belong to the tradition of the Ou-X-Po groups who have followed (in our case rebelliously) in the model of Oulipo (Ouvroir de Littérature Potentielle), except instead of the “li” in “Oulipo” (which stands for Littérature) we have replaced it with Translation. Our full name, Outranspo, spells out “Ouvroir de Translation Potencial.…
Où maintenant ? Quand maintenant ? La difficulté de localiser un tiers texte entre les autotraductions de L'Innommable / The Unnamable de Samuel Beckett
This article seeks to intervene in and disrupt discourse surrounding a canonical author (Samuel Beckett), using the tools offered by reflections on (self-)translation and writing in a foreign language. These tools allow for the construction of a new, third text (in echo to Homi Bhabha's “third space”), emerging from the in-between space of Beckett's self-translations of The Unnamable/L'Innommable. This in-between space can be read as an invitatio…
Xexoxial Endarchy
This paper examines a cross section of authors in the Xerolage collection, a subsection of the experimental poetry publisher Xexoxial Editions. Xerolage prints 25-page chapbooks of visual poetry using a Xerox machine. These chapbooks are printed in an intentional community in Lima, Wisconsin founded in 1991 by mIEKAL aND and Elisabeth Was called Dreamtime Village, that practices alternative living and permaculture farming. The paper asks what kin…
