  • Navigating cross-border labour mobility and employment security in European shipbuilding

Open Access•Ines Wagner, Karen Jaehrling et al.•ARTICLE•Transfer European Review of…•2025

This article investigates how cross-border mobility in the European shipbuilding industry affected the employment security of workers on standard and non-standard contracts in sending and receiving countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. It draws on qualitative findings from Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland and Romania, where shipbuilding production is integrated into transnational networks, leading to high cross-border mobility. Despite restrictio…

  • Creating public value in hostile conditions

Open Access•Simona Brunnerová, Jan Czarzasty et al.•ARTICLE•Transfer European Review of…•2025

In the context of the EU-level frameworks for public procurement and collective bargaining, this article tests, conceptually and empirically, whether the expected expansion of socially responsible public procurement also leads to improvements in collective bargaining as a governance mechanism. The empirical focus is on three cases showing variations in how procurement may influence bargaining. These cases are from Poland and Slovakia, EU Member S…

  • Years after. Changing perspectives on industrial relations in Central and Eastern Europe two decades after EU enlargement

    Open Access•Jan Czarzasty•ARTICLE•Transfer European Review of…•2024

This article looks at the evolution of industrial relations in Central and Eastern Europe after the so-called ‘eastern enlargement’ between 2004 and 2013. The main claim is that 20 years after EU accession the ‘European dream’ (embodied in the European Social Model) has not been fulfilled in the area of industrial relations. Furthermore, the main frame of reference (thus the goal to be reached) has become increasingly distorted over the years. Th…

  • Unilateral crisis prevention and crumbling social partnership in Poland

Jan Czarzasty, Adam Mrozowicki•CHAPTER•Role of Social Partners in…•2021

In this chapter, we examine the dynamics of social dialogue in Poland after 2008. Two unique circumstances are highlighted: the absence of economic recession in Poland and turbulent changes in social concertation. It is argued that the long-lasting deficiencies of the Polish industrial relations were temporarily overcome in 2008–2009 as the result of a fear factor (anticipated economic breakdown) as the main motive for social partners to exert pr…

  • Multiple jobholding in Europe

Open Access•Agnieszka Piasna, Marcello Pedaci et al.•ARTICLE•Transfer European Review of…•2021

This article investigates the relationship between job quality features of the primary job and the propensity to engage in multiple paid activities. The analysis covers workers from 28 European countries using data from the EWCS (European Working Conditions Survey) 2010-2015. The results show that workers experiencing economic and job insecurity in their primary job are more likely to engage in additional paid employment. Multiple jobholders (MJH…

  • Looking for European solutions. Trade unions in Central and Eastern Europe striving for cross-border solidarity

Open Access•Jan Czarzasty, Sławomir Adamczyk et al.•ARTICLE•Transfer European Review of…•2020

This article deals with the dilemmas faced by trade unions from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) in the context of their relations with western European (EU-15) unions and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC). The issue of cross-border solidarity is re-examined, taking into account its historical meanings as well as current developments under the pressures of globalisation and EU integration. The article analyses key factors affecting Ea…
