Contaminant Exposure Profiles Demonstrate Similar Physiological Effects Across Environments Despite Unique Profile Composition in Formosa, Argentina, and Connecticut, USA
OBJECTIVE: Exposure to environmental contaminants is globally universal. However, communities vary in the specific combination of contaminants to which they are exposed, potentially contributing to variation in human health and creating "locally situated biologies." We investigated how environmental exposures differ across environments by comparing exposure profiles between two contexts that differ markedly across political, economic, and sociocu…
Evolution of WHO Covid-19 mask guidelines amid intense demands for rapid advice
During a health emergency, there is an urgent need to rapidly develop guidelines that meet minimum quality standards, as exemplified by the development of WHO guidelines on mask use in health care and community settings during the COVID-19 pandemic. Between January 2020 and October 2023, WHO developed 21 guideline updates on the use of masks as part of infection prevention and control (IPC) practices. Guideline developers had to deal with an ever…

Neil Smith (1954–2012) was an influential Marxist geographer known for his work on gentrification and the process of uneven development. His rent gap theory of gentrification argues that reinvestment in working‐class urban areas arises due to a gap between present and potential ground rent if redeveloped for a higher and better use. Smith characterized gentrification as a class project of revanchism, or revenge, of the upper classes to “take back…

Black Canadians and black Americans: Racial Income Inequality in Comparative Perspective
Using census data, we compare the economic status of blacks and whites in two neighbouring countries - the USA and Canada - examining the effects of international migration of people of colour upon systems of racial hierarchy. At first impression, the racial income gap is markedly smaller in Canada than in the USA. However, this is largely due to the relative sizes of first-, second- and third-plus-generation immigrants in each country. Once this…
Farm Work is Dangerous for Teens: Agricultural Hazards and Injuries Among North Carolina Teens
Children who work in agriculture suffer more than 23,000 injuries and 300 fatalities on American farms every year. Using survey data collected from a random sample of working teens (ages 14 to 17) in North Carolina, the authors analyze the farm‐based hazard exposure and injury experiences of teens who work on farms. The group of farmworking teens (N=141) is 72 percent male, has a mean age of 16.6 years, and is, on average, in the 10th grade. The …
