Nominal Classification without Grammatical Agreement
This paper aims to demonstrate two things. First, Secoya (Tukanoan) has gender markers and shape classifiers. However, unlike other Tukanoan languages, Secoya does not display grammatical agreement, either between the head noun and its modifiers within a noun phrase or between the predicate and its arguments within a clause. Gender markers and shape classifiers are used in antecedent-anaphor relations. They appear in pronominal forms, demonstrati…
The role of information structure in the instantiation of objects
This study analyzes the instantiation of objects in Peruvian Amazonian Spanish (PAS) discourse in two communities with distinct linguistic contexts. We examine the impact of two social variables (gender and place) and nine linguistic variables (transitivity, animacy, definiteness, anaphora function, anaphora expression, cataphora function, cataphora expression, activation, topic persistence) on the speech of eight participants. Our findings indic…
Llegaron en sus canoa
Este estudio investiga las motivaciones cognitivas y funcionales detrás del surgimiento de una construcción posesiva innovadora en el español de la Amazonía peruana. En esta variedad, el núcleo de un sintagmanominal no concuerda necesariamente en número con su modificador, cuando este es un pronombre posesivo. Así, sintagmas del tipo sus canoa son comunes en la Amazonía. Un estudio previo encontró quelas probabilidades de uso de este patrón innov…
Nonverbal predication in Amazonian languages
This volume explores typological variation within nonverbal predication in Amazonian languages. Using abundant data, generally from original and extensive fieldwork on under-described languages, it presents a far more detailed picture of nonverbal predication constructions than previously published grammatical descriptions. On the one hand, it addresses the fact that current typologies of nonverbal predication are less developed than those of ver…

Peruvian Amazonian Spanish
Some linguistic structures found in Amazonian Spanish tend to be associated by and large with a rural variety spoken by people frequently depicted as indigenous. However, direct observations indicate that most of these features are pervasive among speakers across the social spectrum. What, then, are the parameters of linguistic variation in Peruvian Amazonian Spanish? Is there any social and/or linguistic meaning associated with the attested vari…

El secoya del Putumayo
El presente estudio tiene dos propósitos fundamentales: (i) ofrecer la primera descripción fonológica de la lengua secoya (Tucano Occidental) hablada en comunidades ubicadas en los afluentes del río Putumayo, Perú; y, (ii) contribuir al avance de estudios comparativos de la rama occidental de la familia tucano. Actualmente existen algunos estudios de la variedad secoya hablada en el río Aguarico, Ecuador, pero no existe ninguno de la variedad hab…
Is there a ditransitive construction in Kokama-Kokamilla
In Kokama-Kokamilla (KK), ditransitive constructions — i.e. syntactic units that profile three participants and contain two non-subject arguments — do not exist as a distinct type relative to transitives. KK shows both indirective and secundative alignment types (Haspelmath 2004, Dryer 1986, 2006), but no formal or behavioral evidence for a second object of any kind. In KK, typical three-participant events are syntactically encoded in at least th…
