Amateur journalists wrote, typeset and printed journals of essays, commentary, word puzzles and stories, which were circulated primarily among themselves in subcultural networks of reciprocity. A broad cultural analysis character…

  • Drone Journalism as Visual Aggregation

    Open Access•James W Hamilton•ARTICLE•Media and Communication•2020

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs—commonly referred to as drones) in journalism has emerged only recently, and has grown significantly. This article explores what makes drone imagery as an instance of what scholars of visual culture call an aerial view so compelling for major news organizations as to warrant such attention and investment. To do this, the concept ‘visual aggregation’ is introduced to theorize the authority of drone imagery…

  • Social Media as Primary Source

    Cayce Myers, James W Hamilton•ARTICLE•Media History•2014•References: 18

This article explores and critiques the use of social media as a primary source in the writing of twenty-first-century history. Since the introduction of so-called social media in the early 2000s, social scientists, journalists, and users have hailed this media form as a revolutionary departure from the ‘old media’ that dominated the twentieth century. Part of the narrative of ‘new media’ is it provides greater amounts of user agency, removes str…

    Open Access•James W Hamilton, James F Hamilton•ARTICLE•Media Culture & Society•2014•Cited by: 5•References: 58

Common conceptions of user production overstate its novelty while understating its variety. To respond to these lacks, this article develops an analytic map that enables a more nuanced historical and critical understanding and investigation of user production. • User production reconsidered

    Open Access•James W Hamilton, Kristen Heflin•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 12

This article addresses the phenomenon of user production. Upon addressing critically the concept of convergence, it suggests autonomia as an alternative perspective that is exceptionally sensitive to the novelty of digital-media work. However, its value remains limited due not only to a residual technological determinism, but also due to lacking a means of concrete, historical analysis of practice. We propose melding the insights of autonomia wit…
