Avaran luonnon aromit
Paradigma. Näkökulmia tieteen periaatteisiin ja käsityksiin. Kalevalase…

The Popular and the Sacred in Music
Music, as the form of art whose name derives from ancient myths, is often thought of as pure symbolic expression and associated with transcendence. Music is also a universal phenomenon and thus a profound marker of humanity. These features make music a sphere of activity where sacred and popular qualities intersect and amalgamate. In an era characterised by postsecular and postcolonial processes of religious change, re-enchantment and alternative…
Music at the Black Baltic Sea
Music is intimately implicated in racialising discourses. This is particularly pronounced in the case of so-called black music, i.e. the types of music that are commonly associated with African-American identity, most notably jazz and various forms of popular music. Genres of popular music are furthermore constructed continuously on the basis of a notion of their “black roots.” The idea of the “black roots” of jazz and popular music is an essenti…
Why Is Uncle Paintbrush so Funny? The Case of YouTube Translation of a Syrian Kurdish Wedding Song into Finnish
In late 2009 and early 2010, a craze for a YouTube video titled "Niilin hanhet" ("The geese of Nile"; The Kassitus 2009) and its star, a Syrian Kurd singer who became known as Pensselisetä ("Uncle Paintbrush"), swept Finland. It was not the quality of the performance that made the video stand out from the plethora of YouTube productions, but its subtitling in Finnish. "Niilin hanhet" is an example of a practice known to YouTube users as "buffalax…
A Metahistorical Inquiry into Historiography of Nordic Popular Music
This chapter examines how the relation between national culture and emerging forms of transcultural diversity plays out in the historiography of Nordic popular music. The chapter offers a comparative analysis of how histories of popular music have been written in the Nordic countries. A particular focus in the comparison is on Finland and Sweden. The analysis rests on the principles of metahistory, referring to the ways in which historiography is…
Sámi Festivals and Indigenous Sovereignty
This chapter is a contribution to the literatures on Sámi cultural history, Nordic postcolonial studies, and music festivals. Drawing inspiration from social theory, the chapter explores how the proliferation of festivals has helped in the formation of local and transnational Sámi publics in the Nordic region. It argues that festivals help foster a sense of transnational Sámi community and work toward cultural self-determination at three levels: …
Musical Borealism
The chapter develops an original concept of musical borealism, drawing from literatures on European music and cultural history and from orientalism. The chapter looks beyond the simple concept of borealism as an exotic gaze by opening up horizons and offering a series of nuanced distinctions. Basic categories discussed are Nordic myth, Nordic folk and popular music, Nordic global music, Nordic ultra-national music, and non-Nordic Nordic manifesta…
The Oxford Handbook of Popular Music in the Nordic Countries
The Nordic countries, a group of countries spanning a large area of northern Europe and the North Atlantic, present unique natural and cultural environments in which popular music has come to play a significant role. Research on the region’s music has largely followed national narratives and ignored more complex geographies and transcultural issues. This first handbook of music in the Nordic countries explores the significance of popular music in…
The Intersection of the Popular and the Sacred in Youth Cultures
In this editorial to a themed issue of YOUNG: Nordic Journal of Youth Research, the authors discuss why an interdisciplinary approach in youth culture research can benefit from a critical reconside
Music in the Aftermath of the 2011 Utøya Massacre
This chapter is an analysis of the music performed at the memorial ceremony following the 2011 massacre where national extremist Anders Breivik killed 77 people, most of them young delegates at a summer camp of the Labour Party. Following an introductory discussion of theory of music, emotion, and nationhood, the chapter analysis takes the reader deep into a moment of emotional nationalism, just one month after the attack, providing a detailed de…
Popular music: Topics, trends and trajectories
A prescribed alternative mainstream: Popular Music and Canon Formation
This article applies the processes of canon formation suggested by Philip V. Bohlman in The Study of Folk Music in the Modern World to the historiography of popular music. Bohlman distinguishes between at least three different types of folk music canon: a small group canon, a mediated canon and an imagined canon. Adjusting Bohlman's ideas to the case of popular music, a reformulation is proposed in the form of an alternative canon, a mainstream c…
