Symposium on general-equilibrium theory with rationing
This symposium deals with general equilibrium models with rationing. Sylvie Rivot discusses the early work of Jean-Pascal Bénassy, in particular that which he developed in Citation1973 in his thesis. Romain Plassard presents the attempts of several French economists to estimate econometric models in which certain agents can be rationed, models which could have contributed to the formulation of macroeconomic policies. Rodolphe Dos Santos Ferreira …
Cournot on the Communication of Markets
Cournot's views on the effects of international trade on social income have received little attention. Drawing upon a comprehensive analysis of Cournot's writings, this article shows that Cournot distinguished between variations in nominal income and variations in real income. He introduced the principle of compensation of demands: if the price of a commodity changes, the value of the total demand for other commodities remains unchanged. He relie…
"Fred Manville Taylor and the Origins of the Term "Say's Law
The term "Say's Law" was introduced in the twentieth century by an American economist, Fred Manville Taylor. To this date, no research has thoroughly investigated how the term came to be and what it really meant in Taylor's writings. This paper aims to examine how Taylor defined and used it. Drawing upon Taylor's publications and archival sources, we show that Taylor coined the term in direct reference to Jean-Baptiste Say's writings. Simply put,…
Retrospectives Lord Keynes and Mr. Say
Since the publication of Keynes’s General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, generations of economists have been led to believe that Say was Keynes’s ultimate nemesis. By means of textual and contextual analysis, we show that Keynes and Say held similar views on several key issues, such as the possibility of aggregate-demand deficiency, the role of money in the economy, and government intervention. Our conclusion is that there are enough s…

[eng] Quasi-demand and effectif demand : A pedagogic note Alain Béraud, François Etner The agregate demand and supply functions are convenient tools to formalize the behaviour of the agents according to the different market situations. Therefore it seemed useful to go into the details of their construction, without leaving out the intermediary stages. Thus it appears the traditional keynesian models and the theory of disequilibrium lead to functi…
