  • From Longhouse to Village

Kaj Århem•CHAPTER•Beyond the visible and the material•2001

Change has always been a recalcitrant topic to students of society. Constantly challenging, frequently puzzling, historical process—change, diachrony, transformation-refuses to be neatly conceptualized or easily explained. A review of some recent statements on the subject reveals three salient and recurrent themes. The first is the relationship between event and structure (Moore 1987, 1994; Ohnuki Tierney 1990; Sahlins 1981, 1985, 1994); the seco…

  • Ecocosmología y chamanismo en el Amazonas

    Open Access•Kaj Århem•ARTICLE•Revista Colombiana de Antropología•2001•Cited by: 7•References: 8

  • Millennium Among the Makuna

    Kaj Århem•ARTICLE•Anthropology Today•1993•Cited by: 4

  • The makú, the Makuna and the Guiana system

    Kaj Århem•ARTICLE•Ethnos•1989•Cited by: 7•References: 9

it is argued that the Makuna society in the Colombian Vaupés is an intermediate form between two contrasting but related types of social organization, represented by the Carib societies of the Guiana region and the Tukano groups of the Northwest Amazon. The paper suggests that current changes in Makuna society may, in part, be understood in terms of the underlying structure of exchange, encoded in the asymmetric alliance system common to all thes…

  • Makuna Social Organization

Peter Riviere, Kaj Århem•ARTICLE•Man•1982•Cited by: 26

This article examines the social organization of the Makuna, an indigenous group in the northwestern Amazon. It focuses on the interplay of descent, alliance, and the formation of corporate groups. The Makuna utilize a combination of patrilineal descent and exogamous marriage practices, resulting in a complex system of social relations. The study analyzes how these principles shape the structure and dynamics of Makuna communities, including the o…
