Harvesting molluscs in the Eneolithic
Freshwater bivalve shells are frequently identified in faunal assemblages from Neo-Eneolithic tell settlements along the Danube River valley in South-East Romania (5th millennium BC). Up until now, significant accumulations of freshwater bivalve shells have been identified only in household refuse areas of the settlements, where they form consistent shell layers. The origin and formation of such shell accumulations and, more generally, the role o…
Wild, domestic and feral? Investigating the status of suids in the Romanian Gumelniţa (5th mil. cal BC) with biogeochemistry and geometric morphometrics
From operculum to bead
Significant amounts of opercular bones from Cyprinus carpio, used to manufacture circular pearls for adornments, were found from the Romanian Eneolithic, associated with the Gumelnita culture. The origins of this raw material are local: the carp was an important food resource for the communities located close to the River Danube. An experimental program was undertaken to obtain replicas of pearls of C. carpio, to compare with the archaeological p…
Food Supply Strategies in the Romanian Eneolithic
Previously observed specialization in sheep/goat kill-off patterns from Romanian Eneolithic sites raises the question of a limited duration of the slaughtering period. In order to provide reliable month of death distribution for sheep/goats, the approach developed here takes into account uncertainties regarding the age-at-death and the month of birth, based on classic archaeozoological techniques. We show that sheep slaughtering rarely occurred f…

Another facet of man – Red deer relationship in prehistory
The significant quantity of antlers identified in the Gumelniţa A2 level in different stages of processing, from finished objects to consumed debitage waste, motivated us to try to reconstruct the management of the modalities of this raw material, of the processing techniques used and activities developed with the help of antler tools. In other words, the series of antler-made tools presents an important evidence of the activity of the Hârsova-te…
For the Neo-Eneolithic of the Romanian territory, the harpoon represents the type of a11ifact belonging to the bone industry on which we have mast information. The lot we had at our disposal for this study, coming from the settlement from 13orduşani-Popină, is made up of22 harpoons (coming from the diggings of the period 1991-2008), of which two can be considered pieces that were in the course of processing. ln this study we have tried to identif…
Phase and chemical composition analysis of pigments used in Cucuteni Neolithic painted ceramics
Two analytical methods - 241Am-based X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Synchrotron Radiation X-ray Diffraction (SR-XRD) - were used to investigate the elemental and mineralogical composition of pigments which decorate some Cucuteni Neolithic ceramic sherds. Local hematite and local calcite were the main components for red and white pigments, respectively. For black pigments, iron oxides (e.g. magnetite) were used. They were often mixed with manganese …
Observations about the pintaderas from the Cucuteni Culture area in Romania
Area organization, arrangement and use in the Cucuteni, phase A Culture (I)
