  • Tuning the Citizen Science Radio

Open Access•Mark William Johnson, Eliza Varga•ARTICLE•Postdigital Science and Education•2025

Science has always been driven by human consciousness in the context of an ambiguous environment. In modern times, the environment is characterised by sociotechnical complexities and uncertainty, rendering science fundamentally information-driven and statistically-informed, which focuses on uncertainty in contrast to the certainties of the enlightenment. In the context of this, and in the spirit of the point made initially by Popper that all peop…

  • Reclaiming the teacher perspective in digital education – an analysis of university teachers’ agency

Maria Hvid Stenalt, Mark William Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Interactive Learning Environments•2024

Current approaches to digital technology in higher education teaching and learning often instrumentalise teaching and teachers in paving the way for technology. Reclaiming the teacher perspective, this article explores teachers’ agency in relation to technology in higher education. The aim is addressed through examining how teachers address the technological benefits for teaching. Analysing data from Danish university teachers (n = 488), we ident…

  • Communicative Musicality, Learning and Energy

Open Access•Mark William Johnson, Karen Alavi et al.•ARTICLE•Postdigital Science and Education•2023

The sonic environment of learning presents an opportunity to study the space of social relations as energetic dynamics. Like all communication, sound requires energy both to create and to process. In recent years, the field of ‘communicative musicality’ — an interdisciplinary field connecting ethology, sociology, and psychology — examines social relations in their sonic context. Analysing the sonic environment has become more important (and more …

  • Comparative judgement and the visualisation of construct formation in a personal learning environment

Mark William Johnson, Svetlana Rodriguez-Arciniegas et al.•ARTICLE•Interactive Learning Environments•2023

The way in which informal learning in a Personal Learning Environment (PLE) is coordinated is poorly understood. Conversation – with teachers, friends or family – contributes to the processes involved in meaningfully negotiating resources. While institution-centric education creates contexts for conversations and codifies educational attainment, the institution cannot directly codify personal understanding. Through analysing patterns of personal …

  • Digitalization and Uncertainty in the University

Open Access•Mark William Johnson, Elena A Suvorova et al.•ARTICLE•Postdigital Science and Education•2022

Recent initiatives to promote ‘digitalization’ in education exhorting increased digital literacy and ‘computational thinking’ have invited implementation research methods to transform curricula, teaching, and learning. While conceived as a movement from the present of education to an imagined future where envisaged curricula embrace data-oriented and computational practices across subjects, we ask: whose present? Whose future? We revisit the conc…

  • The guts of assessment

Mark William Johnson, Rafiq Saleh•ARTICLE•Interactive Learning Environments•2022

Educational assessment is inherently uncertain, where physiological, psychological and social factors play an important role in establishing judgements which are assumed to be “absolute”. AI and other algorithmic approaches to grading of student work strip-out uncertainty, leading to a lack of inspectability in machine judgement and consequent problems of trust and reliability. The technique of Adaptive Comparative Judgement (ACJ), in focusing on…

  • The impact of clinical uncertainty in the graduate medical education (GME) learning environment

Mark William Johnson, Galina Gheihman et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2022

Background Uncertainty is ubiquitous in medicine. Studies link intolerance of uncertainty to burnout, ineffective communication, cognitive bias, and inappropriate resource use. Little is known about how uncertainty manifests in the clinical learning environment. We aimed to explore the perceptions and experiences of uncertainty among residents and attendings. Methods We conducted a mixed-methods study including a survey, semi-structured interviews…

  • Covid-19 and the Epigenetics of Learning

Open Access•Mark William Johnson, Elizabeth Maitland et al.•ARTICLE•Postdigital Science and Education•2021

Covid-19 is a natural phenomenon that has rapidly upended much of the cultural infrastructure of societies across the globe. Education, which in recent years increasingly tied itself to notions of global culture and markets, is deeply threatened by these changes to the natural environment. This paper makes the case that the relationship between nature and culture in education requires a deep level analysis of the biological and physical substrate…

  • Redundancies in the communication of music

    Open Access•Mark William Johnson, L Leydesdorff•ARTICLE•Systems Research and Behavioral…•2021

We elaborate Alfred Schutz's theory of musical communication empirically. Our technique for analysing musical communication aligns Schutz's sociological theory with the mathematics of anticipatory systems. Music, we argue, can be considered as an anticipatory system that articulates through its diachronic unfolding, fundamental symmetries which can be traced back to its initial moments. Following Bohm and Dubois, we argue that these symmetries ar…

  • Experiencing Language

Open Access•Mark Johnson, Mark William Johnson•ARTICLE•European Journal of Pragmatism…•2014•Cited by: 1

The emergence of linguistic pragmatism has given rise to a lively debate over whether philosophy should focus on language or experience. But the experience vs. language dichotomy is just another type of dualism of the sort that pragmatists ought to be wary of. We need to appreciate that, insofar as pragmatism aspires to elucidate and transform our meaningful experience, it must recognize that meaning goes deeper than language. What linguistic pra…

  • Time, Mechanisms and Technology

Mark Johnson, Mark William Johnson•ARTICLE•Revue de philosophie économique•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 1

  • An Interview With Joan Houston Hall, Chief Editor of the Dictionary of American Regional English

    Mark Johnson, Mark William Johnson•ARTICLE•American Speech•2013•References: 3

In this interview, Joan Houston Hall responds to queries about why it was important to begin the Dictionary of American Regional English, how Frederic Cassidy formed and influenced it, and what characteristics are essential for DARE staff members. She also addresses issues regarding attitudes toward language, questions of taste, derogatory epithets, and what our language tells us about the American people. She describes how new technologies have …

Originally published in 1983. A broad examination of the ways in which teachers gain and use knowledge about their work is presented in this book. At the time, within curriculum studies, there was a developing greater understanding of the major role that teachers play in the implementation of materials within the classroom - as autonomous agents holding, using and creating knowledge of particular kinds which informs all of their work. This book p…
