The 21st century has been marked by intense global transformations, particularly the process of re-signifying land and natural resources within capitalist dynamics. Among the key aspects of this movement is the appropriation of large tracts of land through a variety of mechanisms and forms of control, recognized in the literature as "land grabbing". Part of this dynamic has unfolded through land control by foreign actors. While initial analyses f…
This article aims to analyse a set of strategies deployed by the dominant actors of the agro-export sector in Argentina to achieve legitimacy over their practices, modes of production, organisation and accumulation. We propose that this set of strategies promotes the production of an "extended social consensus"; that is, a type of consensus that, due to the very technology of power at stake, entails a collective construction that seeks to cohere …
Transforming critical agrarian studies
This paper examines the challenges and opportunities faced by critical agrarian scholars in and from the Global South. We argue that despite the historical and structural limitations, the critical juncture of convergence of crises and renewed interest in agrarian political economies offers an opportunity for fostering a diverse research agenda that opens space for critical perspectives about, from and by the Global South, which is mostly absent i…

The role of custom farming in agribusiness expansion in Argentina
This article aims to examine the role of custom farming in the expansion of the agribusiness model in Argentina, and more specifically, of machinery contractors incorporated into productive 'networks' led by large-scale sowing pools and companies. It treats dispossession as being in a dialectic relationship to productivity, thus posing the question of labour as a core discussion in this process. Its purpose is to provide an insight into agribusin…
Temporalidades Del Acaparamiento De Tierras
Network companies, land grabbing, and financialization in South America
This paper examines the connections between two global phenomena: land grabbing and financialization of farmland and agriculture. Drawing upon case studies, we analyse the expansion of two large-scale agricultural firms founded in Argentina to the Latin American Southern Cone during the 2000s commodities boom, focusing on their network models and business strategies. Based on a qualitative approach towards financial and productive practices, we u…
