  • Employer cooperation, productivity and wages

Open Access•Francesco Devicienti, Elena Grinza et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2025•Referencias: 59

Using uniquely rich administrative matched employer–employee data for Italy from 2008 to 2018, we investigate the impact of firms' formal network agreements (FNAs) on firm performance and employee wages. We find an overall significant and economically relevant positive effect of FNAs on various measures of firm performance, but there are no tangible benefits for the workers, and wages decrease slightly, on average. There is, however, marked heter…

  • Firms' margins of adjustment to wage growth

    Open Access•Francesco Devicienti, Bernardo Fanfani•ARTICLE•Economica•2025•Referencias: 71

This study analyses firms' adjustment behaviour when facing higher labour costs. The empirical research design considers several outcomes, and exploits, as a source of variation in labour costs, discontinuities in the growth of contractual wages set by Italian collective bargaining institutions. The results indicate that adjustment channels are highly heterogeneous across the firms' productivity distribution. Employment, revenue, productivity and…

  • The effect of employment protection legislation on the internationalization of SMEs and their participation in global value chains

Open Access•Teresa Barbieri, Francesco Devicienti et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Behavior &…•2025•Referencias: 4

  • How Entry into Parenthood Shapes Gender Role Attitudes

Elena Grinza, Francesco Devicienti et al.•ARTICLE•Feminist Economics•2022•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 18

People’s attitudes about how paid and unpaid work should be divided between the members of a couple determine gendered socioeconomic outcomes to a great extent. It is thus important to understand how gender role attitudes (GRA) are formed and evolve. This article concentrates on a path-breaking event in life: becoming a parent. Using longitudinal data from the United Kingdom, the study shows that, in general, becoming a parent significantly shift…

  • What Are the Benefits of Having More Female Leaders? Evidence from the Use of Part-Time Work in Italy

Open Access•Francesco Devicienti, Elena Grinza et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2019•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 25

Using three waves of a representative survey of Italian private firms, the authors explore the impact of female managers on a firm's use of part-time work. Building on a literature that suggests female leaders display relatively more altruistic values compared to their male counterparts, the authors assess whether these differences manifest themselves in relation to working time arrangements offered by firms. Results, robust to controls for sever…

  • Temporary Employment, Demand Volatility, and Unions

Open Access•Francesco Devicienti, Paolo Naticchioni et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2018•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 41

This article investigates the effect of workplace unionization and product market volatility on firms' propensity to use temporary employment. Using Italian firm-level data, the authors show that volatility has a positive impact on the share of temporary contracts. The baseline estimates for the impact of unions are inconclusive, but a clear pattern emerges when a specification including an interaction term with volatility is used. This approach …

  • Shapley-value decompositions of changes in wage distributions

    Open Access•Francesco Devicienti•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic Inequality•2008•Referencias: 4

  • Downward Wage Rigidity in Italy

    Open Access•Francesco Devicienti, Agata Maida et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2007•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 16

Using the 1985-99 "WHIP" data, we find a sizable amount of downward wage rigidity in Italy, with a prevalence of real over nominal rigidity. The results hold when real rigidity is identified either with reference to collective bargaining dispositions or to price inflation. Consistently with the labour market reforms of the early 1990s, downward rigidities have become less important over time, with the reduction in real rigidities more than offset…
