Die Freiburger Kreise
World War I and the Rise of Hitler
As a German historian recently remarked, for Germany Adolf Hitler was the “off-spring,” the outstanding legacy, of World War I, and no one doubts that.
Personal Chemistry and the Coming of the Cold War
“Roosevelt is dead. We have won the war.” This was the last propaganda slogan of Nazi Germany, which the writer of this review himself remembers having heard as echoed by retreating German troops. In his book Frank Costigliola arrives at a similar assessment regarding FDR’s impact on World War II foreign affairs: “The Cold War was not inevitable,” he writes, ... “If Roosevelt had lived a while longer ... he might have succeeded in bringing about …

The United States and Germany in the Era of the Cold War, 1945–1990
These volumes were originally published in 2004. The close association between the United States and the Federal Republic of Germany was a key element in the international order of the Cold War era. No country had as wide-reaching or as profound an impact on the western portion of divided Germany as the United States. No country better exemplified the East–West conflict in American thinking than Germany. The United States and Germany in the Era o…

Sluicing phenomena
The paper shows that in various sluicing types, the wh-phrase in the sluicing sentence as well as its relatum in the antecedent clause must be F-marked, and it explains this observation with Schwarzschild's (1999) and Merchant's (1999) focus theory. According to the semantics of the wh-phrase, it will argue that the relatum of the wh-phrase is an indefinite expression that must allow a specific interpretation. Following Heusinger (1997, 2000), sp…
On shared indefinite expressions in coordinative structures
The paper shows that shared indefinite expressions in coordinative constructions may differ with respect to their referential properties. This is due to their being either in a focused or in a nonfocused shared constituent. Their different information-structural status follows from Rooth's theory on focus interpretation. Thus it follows that focused shared constitutents must be beyond the actual coordination and that coordinative constructions wi…

Information structure and the referential status of linguistic expression
This volume comprises papers that were given at the workshop Information Structure and the Referential Status of Linguistic Expressions, which we organized during the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Sprachwissenschaft (DGfS) Conference in Leipzig in February 2001. At this workshop we discussed the connection between information structure and the referential interpretation of linguistic expressions, a topic mostly neglected in current linguistics resear…
The Cold War and European integration, 1947–63
The author discusses the impact the Cold War had on European Integration and, in particular, on the American efforts in support of that initiative. He shows that the perceived Communist threat was an important but not the only motivating force behind America's endorsement of a unified Europe. The other motif he singles out independently of, although not unrelated to, the Cold War was the American aim to contain a renascent Germany. It was this pu…
Issues on topics
The present volume contains papers that bear mainly on issues concerning the topic concept. This concept is of course very broad and diverse. Also, different views are expressed in this volume. Some authors concentrate on the status of topics and non-topics in so-called topic prominent languages (i.e. Chinese), others focus on the syntactic behavior of topical constituents in specific European languages (German, Greek, Romance languages). The las…

Extraposition and ellipsis in coordinative structures
What this paper aims to show is that within the field of symmetric coordination there seems to be much reason to distinguish between ellipsis and extraposition

U.S. Secret War Diplomacy, Intelligence, and the Coming of the German evolution in 1918
In late October 1918 the German armies were gradually being pushed out of northern France by the Allied forces; the Hapsburg monarchy had virtually surrendered. In Paris the Allied powers had convened to consider the terms of an armistice to be imposed on Germany. The American president's envoy, Colonel Edward M. House, was on the verge of persuading the European allies to commit themselves to the American peace program, which Germany had already…

Woodrow Wilson and Germany's Membership in the League of Nations, 1918–19
On January 15, 1919, Count Brockdorff-Rantzau, recently appointed foreign minister of the German Republic, concluded a press conference with the following appeal: We demand a policy of reconciliation ..., a policy which realizes a genuine ... League of Nations. But we will be asked whom we are introducing into this League. Then we must be able to say: “We are introducing a united people that wants peace in the world and is willing to enter the li…

Woodrow Wilson, Revolutionary Germany, and Peacemaking, 1918-1919
Schwabe examines the political, economic, and ideological motivations that prompted American and German leaders to adopt strategies that led to discord during this period of transition from war to peace in the international field and from monarchy to republic in Germany. He disputes the interpretation that Wilson betrayed his ideals at Versailles and the thesis that a secret conspiracy between the United States and Germany attempted to contain th…
