Variability of PAH Patterns in Upper Forest Soil (Sub)horizons—A Case Study From South‐Central Poland
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of contaminants characterized by their persistent and toxic nature. This study examines the variability in PAH distribution patterns in the upper layers of forest soils, focusing on the influence of different characteristics of individual soil (sub)horizons. A total of 130 samples were collected from five forest areas in south‐central Poland and analyzed for the 16 priority PAHs. Samples were ta…
Organic fermentative‐humic soil subhorizon (Ofh) as a ‘natural sponge’ of selected trace elements
In a temperate climate zone, the outermost part of forest soil forms the organic‐O horizon. It consists of subhorizons of varying thickness, including the organic fermentative‐humic subhorizon (Ofh), which resembles a tobacco tangled mat. The scientific novelty of this project is to evaluate whether the specific structure of the subhorizon‐Ofh makes it a ‘natural sponge’ for trace elements such as Cd, Hg, Pb and Zn, and whether it can be used as …
