Contexts of Anointing Behavior in a Group of Blond Capuchin Monkeys ( Sapajus flavius ) Inhabiting an Atlantic Forest Fragment
Parasitism is one of the primary causes of biotic stress in several taxa, and behaviors resembling self‐medication have been documented in numerous species. Anointing involves the application of chemical substances derived from animals, plants, mud, soils, and minerals, often emitting a pungent odor, onto an animal's body. We examined the circumstances surrounding 34 bouts of anointing with millipedes in a group of blond capuchin monkeys ( Sapaju…
Capuchinmonkeyson Social Media: A Threat for Species Conservation
There remains a debate as to whether the display of wild animals in popular media, such as the Internet, contributes toward or erodes conservation behavior. A good model to assess these impacts are capuchin monkeys (genera Cebus and Sapajus), given that they have historically been traded as pets internationally and are among Hollywood’s most famous primate actors. We used crowdsourcing tools to survey social media posts (YouTube and Instagram) an…
Monkeying around Anthropocene: Patterns of human-nonhuman primates' interactions in Brazil
In Anthropocene, approximately 70% of all terrestrial ecosystems are highly modified by human activities and more than a half of all primate's species in the world are endangered. Here we present results of a systematic review on published articles with an Ethnoprimatology approach, aiming to assess the nationwide pattern and quality of proximity/interaction between human-nonhuman primates in Brazil, a country vulnerable to high deforestation rat…
Competition during sugarcane crop raiding by blond capuchin monkeys (Sapajus flavius)
Physiological and behavioral responses to routine procedures in captive common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus)
Energetic Payoff of Tool Use for Capuchin Monkeys in the Caatinga: Variation by Season and Habitat Type
In this paper, we analyze predictions from the energetic bottleneck and opportunity models to explain the use of stones to crack open encased fruit by capuchins in dry environments. The energetic bottleneck model argues that tool use derives from the need to crack open hard‐encased fruits which are key resources during periods of food scarcity. The opportunity model argues that tool use by capuchins derives from simultaneous access to stones and …
