  • Face threats in conflict escalation

    Open Access•William A Donohue, Daniel Druckman•ARTICLE•International Journal of Conflict…•2025

Purpose The purpose of the study is to determine whether predictions about conflict escalation were more consistent with Politeness Theory (which predicts de-escalation in the face of escalation) or Social Interactionist Theory (which predicts intensified escalation in the face of conflict escalation). Design/methodology/approach An online experiment was conducted to test the effects of conflict escalations on the desire to further escalate or di…

  • Perceptions of face threats in conflict

    Open Access•William A Donohue, Daniel Druckman•ARTICLE•International Journal of Conflict…•2022

Purpose The purpose of this study was to determine the relative impact of positive and negative face threats in conflict scenarios on the relational quality between disputants. This study also sought to determine whether the contextual variables of relational distance and power differential mediated this relationship as predicted by politeness theory. Design/methodology/approach To test the hypotheses, a 2 × 2 × 2 design was implemented manipulat…

  • Transitions from Infinite to Finite Games as Critical Moments

    Open Access•William A Donohue•ARTICLE•Negotiation Journal•2020

This theory article argues that negotiation is often played as a finite game that consists of a known number of players using an agreed-upon set of rules (when parties are bargaining in good faith) aimed at achieving a specific outcome. However, activities and events leading up to negotiation can be viewed as an infinite game that has no fixed entities such as personnel, rules, and outcomes. Thus, a critical moment occurs when parties agree to ma…

More recent developments include nonlinear approaches intended to deal with the complexity of the world as it presents itself. The advent of new technologie…

  • Interaction Dynamics Predict Successful Negotiation in Divorce Mediation

    Open Access•William A Donohue, John L Sherry et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•2016•Referencias: 24

Though communication is a process that unfolds over time, it has been difficult to study it as a dynamic process. This article examines the process of real-life divorce mediations as a dynamic system. First, the article sets out a paradigm of an interaction dynamic, revealing underlying dynamic patterns of frame coordination and how those patterns predict successful negotiation. Second, the article details a methodology for studying communication…

  • Validating Liwc Dictionaries

Open Access•William A Donohue, Yuhua Liang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•2014•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 9

This article presents a validation strategy for creating new LIWC (Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count) dictionaries. The context used for this validation study is an analysis of the Israeli-Palestinian rhetoric preceding the 1993 Oslo I accords by Donohue and Druckman (2009). In that study, coders were trained to code six constructs in the texts: looking forward, looking backward, power, affiliation, trust, and mistrust. For the current study, six…

  • The Identity Trap

    Open Access•William A Donohue•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•2012•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 7

The purpose of this article is to create a framework for thinking about how language themes propagated in radio broadcasts start to degenerate into the reification of a culture that tolerates and even encourages classification and dehumanization. Understanding these language themes becomes an early warning system that begins to signal the beginning of a genocidal spiral. This framework is termed the Identity Trap, and it demonstrates how various …

  • Message Framing Surrounding the Oslo I Accords

    Open Access•William A Donohue, Daniel Druckman•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•2009•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 19

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between the secret negotiations and the public rhetoric of Palestinian and Israeli leaders leading up to the Oslo I Accords. To accomplish this goal, we coded public statements made by Israeli and Palestinian leaders in the months preceding the accords and the events that unfolded during the talks. We hypothesized that the Palestinian leaders, as nonstate actors, would engage in outbidding …

    Open Access•Jenifer Cartland, Holly S Ruch‐Ross et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Evaluation•2008•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 1

In the past three decades, program evaluation has sought to more fully engage stakeholders in the evaluative process. But little information has been gathered from stakeholders about how they share in evaluation tasks and whether role sharing leads to confusion or tensions between the evaluator and the stakeholders. This article reports findings from surveys and interviews with 20 evaluator—project director (lead stakeholder) pairs to explore how…

  • Analyzing Negotiation Tactics

    Open Access•William A Donohue•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•1981•Citada por: 16•Referencias: 28

This research has three main objectives: to formulate a set of negotiation tactics based on a qualitative examination of bargaining interaction and prior research, to develop an interact system to code negotiation interaction based on these tactics, and to test the extent to which relative tactical use could be used to determine winners and losers in the negotiation. Three types of tactics were developed: attacking, defending, and regressing. The…

    William A Donohue•ARTICLE•The Tocqueville Review/La revue…•1984

To many Americans the ideas of freedom and democracy are inseparable if not synonomous. But students of liberal democracy have been hesitant to conjoin the two values as one property. Tocqueville was clearly one of those students. To be sure, he understood that a link between freedom and democracy could be established. But he did not see the tie as being axiomatic. Freedom for Tocqueville, meant individual independence, individual initiative and …
