Pursuing Hope in the Premodern World
Enslaved Children in Roman Egypt: Experiences from the Papyri
The ancient Mediterranean was home to a youthful population. Demographic dynamics favoured a relatively high proportion of children and adolescents who were visibly present in their multitudes in the cities, towns, and villages; a significant proportion of these young people were of slave status, some having been enslaved or, as is more likely, born into slavery. The presence and lives of enslaved persons are documented plentifully in textual, ma…
Slavery in the Late Antique World, 150 – 700 CE
Slavery in the Late Antique World, 150 – 700 CE investigates the ideological, moral, cultural, and symbolic aspects of slavery, as well the living conditions of slaves in the Mediterranean basin and Europe during a period of profound transformation. It focuses on socially marginal areas and individuals on an unprecedented scale. Written by an international team of scholars, the volume establishes that late ancient slavery is a complex and polymor…
Children’s Urban Environments in an Ancient City: Social and Physical Realities
The crucial roles played by young people in the lives of ancient urban and civic spaces has been underestimated in discussions of urban life. Through our case study in Roman Egypt, we scrutinize expectations placed on young people, the specific roles they would have taken in these environments, and their agency in shaping, and responding to, the expectations and demands placed on them by their physical and social environments. The discussion addr…
Single Life in Late Antiquity? Virgins between the Earthly and the Heavenly Family
Gender, Memory, and Identity in the Roman World
Knucklebones
Knucklebones were used throughout the ancient world to play games and for gambling. They were used with different sets of rules and scoring, and were also used for divination, having a strong cultural presence in the Greco‐Roman world. Playing knucklebones was a standard way of presenting children in painting and sculpture even though they were used at all levels of society by males and females of all ages.
Children, pledging of
Family strategies and the need for cash in an economy based on self‐sufficiency led to the pledging of freeborn children becoming a common phenomenon in Greco‐Roman world, both for boys and girls. Parents would pledge children, with their labor and services as further security, for the repayment for debts. Often the pledged child worked in the household of the creditor for the capital and/or interest of the debt, and thus the phenomenon was linke…
Elite Children, Socialization, and Agency in the Late Roman World
"In thirty chapters, The Oxford Handbook of Childhood and Education in the Classical World presents current research in a wide range of topics on ancient childhood, including sub-disciplines of Classics that rarely appear in collections on the family or childhood such as archaeology and ancient medicine. Contributors include some of the foremost experts in the field and younger, up-and-coming scholars. Unlike most edited volumes on childhood or t…
Grandparents, grandchildren
In Greco‐Roman Antiquity, as a pre‐modern society with high mortality, the presence of grandparents in the lives of their grandchildren was never self‐evident.
Apprenticeship
Child labor, whether by freeborn or slave children, was commonplace in the ancient world.
Virginity
Throughout antiquity, virginity had “great metaphorical and mythical power ... generating and representing a whole complex of cultural beliefs” (Kelly 2000: ix–x). Associating integrity, perfection, and purity with virginity was a commonplace, and virginity (of the chosen individuals) was seen as the best guarantee for (the communal) fertility.
Minores
In Roman law, minores was a legal category denoting persons no longer below the age of puberty ( impuberes ), but who still had not achieved their full independence, as they were less than twenty‐five years old ( aetas perfecta ).
Children and Agency: Religion as Socialisation in Late Antiquity and the Late Medieval West
The aim of the paper is to present a new approach to the study of pre-modern children and childhood. By exploiting concepts of modern childhood studies, particularly socialisation and agency, we intend to shift the focus from 'childhood' and parental attitudes to children's own experience and action. We synthesise recent research on children in Late Antiquity and the Late Medieval West, which were pre-modern societies based on agricultural produc…
