The Textual Unity of the Torah
After a certain period, which cannot be exactly defined, the Torah of Moses was conceived of as one textual unit that was copied in the same way even if it was included in separate scrolls because of technical constraints. It seems that the earliest period that may be established for the textual unity of the Torah is the date of the LXX (probably 285 BCE), since its harmonizing pluses, a secondary textual feature, are evenly spread in all the boo…
The Formation of the (Proto‐)Masoretic Text
We define several principles for analyzing the development patterns of the proto-MT, such as the two stages in the life of the proto-MT books, the assumption that there was only a single copy of the proto-MT of each book, and the different textual quality of the scripture books. A guiding principle for our thinking is that the archetype of the proto-MT was not formed at one time. To the assumption that the canonization of the three parts of scrip…

The Publication of the Textual History of the Bible in Light of the Progress in Textual Scholarship
Much significant progress in textual criticism occurred in the 20th century, as is visible in new primary evidence, understanding the textual witnesses, approaches to textual criticism, textual theories, computer-assisted research, and text editions. This review article discusses how these new data and theories are handled in a new research tool, the Textual History of the Bible (THB). The THB makes it easier for scholars to handle this wealth of…
The Text-Critical Use of the Septuagint in Biblical Research
This handbook provides a practical guide for the student and scholar alike who wishes to use the Septuagint (LXX) in the text-critical analysis of the Hebrew Bible. It does not serve as another theoretical introduction to the LXX, but it provides all the practical background information needed for the integration of the LXX in biblical studies. The LXX, together with the Masoretic Text and several Qumran scrolls, remains the most significant sour…
Understanding the Text of the Bible 65 Years after the Discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls
The focus of this study is the biblical Dead Sea Scrolls, 65 years after their discovery near the Dead Sea, with the purpose of improving our understanding of the text of Hebrew Scripture. The Qumran finds (more than 200 fragmentary scrolls) reflect textual plurality, and all the biblical texts were probably considered authoritative. At the same time, the 25 Scripture scrolls from sites in the Judean Desert outside Qumran are virtually identical …

Besseres lässt sich von einem Verfassungskommentar nicht sagen.“ Herbert Günther Staaatsanzeiger für das Land Hessen 2018 (50), 1494–1495
Scribal Practices and Approaches Revisited
This article includes a response to papers read in an I-SBL session (St. Andrews University, 9 July 2013) that was devoted to the monograph by E. Tov, Scribal Practices and Approaches Reflected in the Texts Found in the Judean Desert (STDJ 54; Leiden: Brill, 2004). The conference papers focused on the theory of a special Qumran Scribal Practice.

Criteria for Evaluating Textual Readings: The Limitations of Textual Rules
Old Testament textual criticism focuses on variant readings (such as “on the seventh day” in the MT of Gen 2:2 as opposed to “on the sixth day” in the Samaritan Pentateuch and in the LXX and the Peshitta) and these readings must be evaluated carefully. Ever since the seventeenth century, abstract rules have been formulated for the evaluation of textual readings. These abstract rules are of different types and each generation of OT scholars has a …
