Reflecting on Sociological Research Online
In this article, I reflect on my history, relationship, and experiences with Sociological Research Online (SRO), its role in and influence on different aspects of my career, including being the journal where I published my first academic article and first served on an editorial board, as well as its importance within academic publishing and Sociology itself. The piece is divided into two sections representing different aspects of my connection: R…

The far right, the mainstream and mainstreaming: Towards a Heuristic Framework
The study of far-right parties and politics is one of the most high-profile research areas in political science and related disciplines. Far-right parties have been the subject of vast amounts of varied scholarship since their turn-of-the-century resurgence. However, as the far right has become a mainstay, with Brexit and the election of Donald Trump in 2016 blurring the boundaries between mainstream and far-right politics, it has become crucial …
Revolutionary lives of the Red and Black Atlantic since 1917
Revolutionary lives of the Red and Black Atlantic brings to light the life histories of a wide range of radical figures whose political activity in relation to the black liberation struggle was profoundly shaped by the global impact and legacy of the Russian Revolution of October 1917. The volume introduces new perspectives on the intellectual trajectories of well-known figures and critical activists including C. L. R. James, Paul Robeson, Walter…
The Red and the Black: The Russian Revolution and the Black Atlantic
This edited collection explores the inspiration of the Russian Revolution of 1917 for black radicals across the African diaspora. The volume challenges European-centred understandings of the Russian Revolution and the global left and enables new insights on the relations between Communism and various black radical traditions
Black resistance to British policing
Using a decade of activist research, this book offers a radical analysis of grassroots black resistance to policing in twenty-first-century Britain
Returning to Reactionary Democracy: Reviews, responses and reflections
It has been a humbling process to see Reactionary Democracy engaged with so thoroughly by scholars we respect and admire. We were pleased to read that the book provided food for thought for the fou

Revisiting histories of anti-racist thought and activism
This piece reconsiders histories of anti-racist thought and practice, including the linkages between anti-racisms and other traditions of liberatory thought. We argue that anti-racism should be understood as a strand in radical thought linking internationalism, institutional critique and street activism, in the process interfeeding with other social movements. The traditions of anti-racist thought discussed in this special issue exemplify these c…
Whiteness, populism and the racialisation of the working class in the United Kingdom and the United States
The election of Donald Trump and the Brexit vote were widely hailed as examples of (white) working class revolts. This article examines the populist racialisation of the working class as white and ‘left behind’, and representative of the ‘people’ or ‘demos’, in the campaigns and commentaries. We argue that such constructions made race central, obscured the class make-up, allowed for the re-assertion of white identity as a legitimate political cat…
Historical Perspectives on Organized Crime and Terrorism
Terrorism
This entry on terrorism examines the definition and problems defining the phenomenon, types, and typologies developed and used to understand terrorism, its history and different approaches to periodization, and finally its study. Specifically, it looks at the history and development of terrorism studies in the 1960s and 1970s as an interdisciplinary expert field, and its growth post‐9/11 and in the context of the war on terror. This is followed b…

Articulations of Islamophobia: From the Extreme to the Mainstream
This article examines the construction, functions and relationship between the diverse and changing articulations of Islamophobia. The aim is to contribute to debates about the definition of Islamophobia, which have tended to be contextually specific, fixed and/or polarized between racism and religious prejudice, between extreme and mainstream, state and non-state versions, or undifferentiated, and offer a more nuanced framework to: (a) delineate…
What a girl's gotta do: The labor of the biopolitical celebrity in austerity Britain
This article debunks the widespread view that young female celebrities, especially those who rise to fame through reality shows and other forms of media-orchestrated self-exposure, dodge “real” work out of laziness, fatalism, and a misguided sense of entitlement. Instead, the authors argue that becoming a celebrity in a neoliberal economy such as that of the United Kingdom, where austerity measures disproportionately disadvantage the young, women…
Race and racisms: A Critical Approach
Reflexivity in criminological research: Experiences with the powerful and the powerless
Doing research with criminals or deviants has inspired much academic reflection, particularly in respect of the risks and dangers which researchers may face in these contexts, as well as the ethical, legal and moral dilemmas they provoke. This collection contributes to, advances and consolidates discussions of the range of methods and approaches in criminology through the presentation of diverse international case studies in which the authors ref…

Race, Multiculturalism and the 'Progressive' Politics of London 2012: Passing the 'Boyle Test
This paper will examine the ways in which race, multiculturalism and nation have been constructed, used and evoked in the London 2012 Olympics bid, branding and promotion. The paper will focus on the two-pronged strategy promoting modern, diverse, multicultural Britain and the more conservative traditional, historic Britain, and the tensions and contradictions between these. These are tensions and contradictions which have been exposed and exacer…
Discourses and Practices of Terrorism: Interrogating Terror
The material and discursive consequences of counter-terror discourse on the organization of life in democratic societies are already apparent, but what about the functions of this discourse in and of itself, as a mode of communication and \nengagement? Through the expression and transmission of fear and paranoid anxiety this discourse justified the extension of security agency powers and legitimizes a ‘politics’ of securitization, by redefining p…
