The Discipline of Economics and the Rise of Corporate Capitalism in the Late Nineteenth Century
This article examines the formation of the discipline of “Economics,” emerging from “Political Economy,” in relation to the transformation of industrial (or “entrepreneurial”) capitalism into finance (or “corporate”) capitalism in the late nineteenth century. In so doing, it explores the creation of the structure and goals of the modern disciplines of higher education in the Euro-American Victorian era. The contrast between “classical” economics …

A Political Economy of Modernism: Literature, Post-Classical Economics, and the Lower Middle-Class
In A Political Economy of Modernism, Ronald Schleifer examines the political economy of what he calls 'the culture of modernism' by focusing on literature and the arts; intellectual disciplines of post-classical economics; and institutional structures of corporate capitalism and the lower middle-class. In its wide ranging study focused on modernist writers (Dreiser, Hardy, Joyce, Stevens, Woolf, Wells, Wharton, Yeats), modernist artists (Cézanne,…
The Aesthetics of Pain: Semiotics and Affective Comprehension in Music, Literature, and Sensate Experience
This essay examines the extreme experience of pain in relation to the aesthetic experiences of music, poetry, and discursive prose. It argues that experience in general is conditioned by schemas of experience that direct attention and expectation , and for this reason, while it feels immediate—with the immediacy of experience being its defining quality—nevertheless experience, as such, is mediated. Semiotics—and the human sciences more generally—…
The semiotics of sensation: A. J. Greimas and the experience of meaning
It has been the life-long ambition of A. J. Greimas to analyze the nature of meaning, and in his work he has consistently described meaning as a felt experience, what he calls the “feeling of understanding.” This essay examines the Greimassian investigation of meaning as experiential – which is to say sensational – as well as cognitive by analyzing, by means of Greimas’s “semiotic square,” P. M. S. Hacker’s recent exploration of the relationship …

Modernism and Time: The Logic of Abundance in Literature, Science, and Culture, 1880–1930
In Modernism and Time, Ronald Schleifer analyses the transition from the Enlightenment to post-Enlightenment ways of understanding in Western thought. Schleifer argues that this transition in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century expresses itself centrally in an altered conception of temporality. He examines this period's remarkable breaks with the past in literature, music, and the arts more generally. Whereas Enlightenment thought see…

Genre and Structure: Toward an Actantial Typology of Narrative Genres and Modes
Claude Levi-Strauss is famous for ingenious solutions to literary puzzles-his explanation of the structure of the Oedipus myth is an example-but he has left some puzzles of his own to be decoded. One of the most tantalizing is the Boolean matrix which he offers as structural model defined as the group of transformations of a small number of elements (S&F, p. 183)1 to account for Vladimir Propp's linear formula for the structure of Russian wondert…

The Space and Dialogue of Desire: Lacan, Greimas, and Narrative Temporality
In Freudian Thing Jacques Lacan attempts to narrative return to Freud in psychoanalysis. The form of his narration is a kind of polemical ventriloquism in which Lacan speaks for his adversaries, for Truth herself, and in a section entitled discourse of the other, for the desk behind which he stands as he talks. In this essay the narration of his discourse on and with things takes the forms of a colloquy with his audience, riveted so respectfully …

Essentiellement paradoxale, l'ironie est la determination par excellence de l'individualite, qui est et n'est pas ce qu'elle est| elle pose fondamentalement la question de l'individualite. The Mysteries of Identity: A Theme in Modern Literature
OF THE MOST FASHIONABLE LITERARY TERMS these days is persona which is the Latin word for the mask that actors used to wear in the Greek and Roman theater. The currency of the term suggests that the identity of the author and his characters, and the distinction between them, has become a problem. When critics call characters in poems and plays and novels personae, they may mean one of two different things. They may mean that the characters are mas…
